1905 – Bengal was partitioned by Lord Curzon creating a Muslim-majority state in the east and a Hindu-majority state in the west. The partition fuelled opposition and was a key event in the rise of armed natioalism and then
Swadeshi movement. the day was observed as a “day of mourning” across Bengal. People fasted, walked barefoot in processions singing “Vande Mataram,” and tied rakhis (sacred threads) on each other as a symbol of Unity.
1942 – Cyclone in Bay of Bengal kills some 40,000 south of Calcutta India.
1964 – China detonated the country’s first atomic bomb, and became the fifth country with nuclear arms after the United States (1945), Great Britain (1953), the Soviet Union (1961), and France.

1984 – The National Security Guard was established following Operation Blue Star to act as a federal contingency force and combat terrorist activities.
1994 – CIA connection to CN Annadurai alleged in book on Seshan, then CM Jayalali
tha obtains stay on release of the book. Annadurai was Lok Sabha member from Madras (now Chennai). Founder member of DMK, he was also the 4th Chief Minister of the state.
1999 – Geet Sethi bagged the Fred Davis award as the “Billiards Player of the Year 1998-99”. He has won eight World Professional Billiards titles, two world records, and several Asian Games titles in his career. He remained World Chapion for 15 years, from 1992-2007. He is also a known Snooker player.
Born…. 1946 – Naveen Patnaik, politician and founder of the Biju Janata Dal. Son of former Air Force pilot and Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, Naveen joined politics after his father died. He founded Biju Janata dal in 1997 and became Member of Parliament and a minister in NDA govt. under PM Atal Behari Vajpayee. He ruled the state of Orissa as a Chief Minister for 20 years from March 2000 to June 2024, becoming the 2nd longest serving CM of a state. In 2024 Assembly elections, his party lost majority to BJP and failed to win any Lok sabha seat too. BJD leads the Opposition in Orissa Assembly now.
1948 – Hema Malini, popular South and Bollywood film actress and BJP Member of Parliament from Mathura since 2014. Debuted in films with Tamil film Idhu Sathiyam in 1963 and later in Hindi cinema with Sapno Ka Saudagar opposite great showman Raj Kapoor. Hema has a score of jubilee films with Dharmendra, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar and other popular heroes. Johney Mera Naam, Andaaz, Lal Patther, Dream Girl, Seeta Aur Geeta, Tum Haseen Mein Jawan, Phool, Aur Kaante, Sanyasi, Kranti, Ek Chaadar Maili si, Dharmatma, Pratigya, holey, Charas, Jugnu, Dillagi, Prem Nagar, Baaghvan, Baabul etc. She married film industry’s popular He Man Dharmendra Deol in 1980 and has two daughters Isha and Aahna. She has been awarded Padma shri and won Filmfare awards, Lifetime Achievement awardand several other accolades.
RIP…. 1992 – Capt. P. K. Sahgal of Azad Hind Fauz, founded by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in During the trial at the Red Fort, he said, “Because I wanted freedom for my motherland , I was ready to shed my blood for it.”
