1556 – 2nd Battle at Panipat: Mughal army under Bairam Khan beats Hindu General Hemu (Hemchander Vikramaditya) representing Mohd Adil Shah Suri. Hemu had earlier beaten Mughal army in Delhi on Oct. 07, 1556 and was crowned as Vikramaditya.
1556 – Akbar (14) succeeds his father Humayun as Sultan of Delhi.
1961 – P
t. Jawaharlal Nehru arrived in New York. This was the third occasion when an Indian Prime Minister went to United States.
1990 – Janata Dal splits. The breakaway group claims support of 58 M.P.’s to elect Mr. Chandrashekhar as leader. V.P. Singh’s government loses confidence motion in the Lok Sabha.
1998 – India
and Pakistan agree to continue their talks on the Tulbul navigator project on the Jhelum in Kashmir, despite differences over various provisions of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960.
2013 – The PSLV-XL rocket carrying the Mars Orbiter Mission probe is launched by India’s Space Research Organization.
Born…. 1469- Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh panth, who preached Ek Omkar (God is One). He preached spirituality, love, peace and humanity among all human beings. Guru Nanak ji was born on Kartik Purnima in 1469 in Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib, So, Jayanti is celebrated according to Hindu calender and falls on Nov. 05, this year. Nanak was the son of a trader Kalu Rai, who gave him some money to do a Sauda (trade in market). Young Nanak purchased food items and served to poor people and sadhus in the bazaar. He called it Sachcha Sauda. Such benevolent acts and teachings made him a Guru, a preacher Saint among people and followers. He collected all noble ideals from Hindu, Muslim and other religions and wrote several verses which were collected by Bhai Mardana, a muslim (mirasi) follower who sang Guru’s verses and were later compiled in Guru Granth Saheb.
1870 – Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das. Fomous Bengali lawyer, freedom fighter, writer who founded Bengali Swaraj Party. He was the mentor of Netaji Subhash Bose and defended Aurobindo Ghosh in Alipore Bomb case of 1909. He was elected President of Indian National Congress but resigned and fpunded Congress Khilafatv Party due to differences with MK Gandhi 1923. 1930 – Arjun Singh. Popular Congress leader opposed to Shukla brothers in the state, was Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh twice, Central Minister in PV Narasimha Rao and
Manmohan Singh govts. and Governor of Punjab helped signing up Rajiv Longowal Accord. Known for surrender of decoit Dasyu Queen Phulan Devi, he also had many controverises too viz., helping Union Carbide in Bhopal Gas tragedy, Churhat Lottery case, Kerva Dam and Jain Hawala case (pic credit-wikimedia.com).
1974 – V Harikrishna – popular singer is known for his work in the Kannada and Hindi film industry. He was 8 years old when he played the keyboard for an orchestra that his father had named after him. He has won several state and Indian film awards.
1988 – Virat Kohli – India’s batting icon and one of modern-day cricket’s greatest success stories, Virat Kohli, turned 37 on Wednesday. Since bursting onto the international cricket scene back in 2008 as a chubby-faced teenager from the streets of West Delhi, the veteran batter has reached a stratosphere in world cricket that few have achieved, accumulating a mix of personal and team accomplishments that could leave almost any major cricketer. Virat wore India’s whites for 123 Tests, scoring 9,230 runs at a
