1863 – American Congress authorised a track width of 4-ft 8-1/2 in. as the standard for the Union Pacific Railroad, which became the accepted width for most of the world. (In rail transport, track gauge is the spacing of the rails on a railway track and is measured between the inner faces of the load-bearing rails).

1928 – Mrs R Valentino patented a paper  Doll.  She  was  an  artist, costume designer and  married  to  popular Italian romantic actor Rudolf Valentino.

1930 – Barrister turned  political  leader  MK  Gandhi sent a historic letter to the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin, outlining his plan to break the British salt laws. This formal notice preceded the famous Dandi March, which began ten days later.

1947 – Amid the escalating tensions leading to Independence, the Premier of undivided Punjab, Sir Khizar Hayat Tiwana, resigned in protest against the proposed Partition of India.

1952 – Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Sindri Fertilizer Factory in Bihar, India’s first large-scale government-owned industrial unit. It was upgraded and revived  by PM Narendra Modi  in 2024  with  8,900-crore with funds boost and capacity enhancement of 12.7 MT urea production per annum.

1962 – Burmese (Myanmar)  army led by General Ne Win seizes power in a coup d’état. More recently on Feb. 01, 2021  military again  took control of the  country  deposing the elected  government led by Aung Saan Suu Kyi.

1983 – The compact disc (CD) is launched in North America and Europe.                                                    2006 – A historic nuclear pact was signed between India and the United States during President George W. Bush’s visit to New Delhi.

Born…. 1933 – Anandji Virji Shah, one half of the legendary music composer duo Kalyanji-Anandji. They were  musician brothers who paired together to compose music for over 200 films in Bollywood and  composed music for   hundreds of  melodious evergreen songs for music lovers worldover.  Elder brother Kalyanji died on Aug. 24, 2000. Popular sound tracks are from  films  Mahal, Saraswatichandra, Mahal, Poorab Aur Pachchim, Bairaag, Safar, Lawaris, Tridev, Janzeer, Upkar, Don, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar,  Johnny Mera Naam etc.  The pair won a Padma Shri, a National Award, Filmfare awards apart from several other music honors/accolades. 1990 – Tiger Shroff, popular Bollywood actor and martial artist. Tiger debuted in 2014 through film  Heropanti  where he won IIFA award and has done about 14 films like Baghi 1 & 2, A Flying Jatt, War etc.

RIP….1568 – Meerabai, saint poet. Bhajan singer and ardent devotee of Shri Krishna, who  forsake her princely home for Krishnabhakti. It is belived she was forced to consume poison for leaving her worldly husband  for Krishna. Some believe she left her  kingdom after her husband died in war against Akbar’s army and went to Brindavan and  stayed there  untill her salvation in devotion.

1949 – Sarojini Naidu, “Nightingale of India”, freedom fighter, social worker and patriot. She became the first  woman President of Indian National Congress in 1925. She  was elected to the Constituent Assembly of India and  appointed Governor of United Privices (U.P.) after independence (1947-49). as the first woman Governor of  a state.

Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad is an iconic Indian women’s worker cooperative that grew from a humble, seven-member operation into a massive business empire, exemplifying women’s empowerment, self-reliance, and cooperative success. Seven Gujarati housewives—Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben. N. Tanna, Laguben Amritlal Gokani, Jayaben V. Vithalani, and Diwaliben Lukka started with a borrowed sum of just Rs. 80 in March 1959. They began making papads on a terrace in Girgaum, Mumbai. They sold four packets on the first day, earning 8 annas. As of 2019–2023, the annual turnover has been reported to be over Rs. 1,600 crore. The organization now provides jobs to over 40,000–45,000 women (known as ‘Lijjat Sisters’) across India.                                                                                                                                                                                              Jaswantiben Popat was honoured with Padma Shri in 2021 by President  Ram Nath Kovind.
