1716 – The first lion to be seen in America, tamed for exhibition, was exhibited by Captain Arthur Savage at his house in Brattle Street, Boston.

1789 – 1st US national Thanksgiving.

1832 – The first horse drawn American street car in the U.S. began public operation in New York City. It was equipped with iron wheels and drawn over iron rails laid in the centre of the road.

1922 – Archaeologist Howard Carter pierced the second of two doorways closing the tomb of King Tutankamun. Carter made archaeological history by unearthing the first Egyptian pharaonic tomb that still contained most of its treasures.

1948 – 1st polaroid camera sold for $89.75 in Boston at the Jordan Marsh department store.

1949 – India adopts a constitution as a British Commonwealth Republic. (The Constitution was prepared by the Drafting commission under the chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. The preamble reads, “We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Sovereign, Secular Democratic Republic and to secure to all its citizens JUSTICE: social, economical and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity and to promote among them all; FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation”).

1952 – 1st modern 3-D movie “Bwana Devil,” premieres in Hollywood.

1960 – First S.T.D. system of telephone (Subscriber Trunk Dialling) services started between Lucknow and Kanpur.

1983 – Heathrow Airport, robbed of 6,800 gold bars worth $38.7 million.

2003 – India accepts Pakistan’s offer of a ceasefire in Kashmir.

2008 – Mumbai terrorist attacks over four days. (10 terrorists carried out a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai. 164 people were killed and at least 308 wounded. Ajmal Kasab who was captured alive, disclosed that the attackers were members of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, among others. The Government of India declared

that the attackers came from Pakistan, and their controllers were in Pakistan. On 7 January 2009, Pakistan confirmed the sole surviving perpetrator of the attacks was a Pakistani citizen. On 9 April 2015, the foremost ringleader of the attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was granted bail against surety bonds of ₨ 200,000 in Pakistan).

2013 – If verified, a Buddhist shrine discovered in Nepal that dates to 550 BC could change the date of the Buddha’s birthday, a Unesco Heritage site.

2018 – Third of a species begin dying (23,000) over a two day period, the spectacled flying foxes, unable to survive heatwave of 42 degrees in northern Queensland, Australia.

2022 – 2,500 people pose naked for photographer Spencer Tunick on Australia’s Bondi Beach to raise awareness of skin cancer.

1836 – John Loudon McAdam, the inventor of of macadamized roads (Scottish).

2005 – Gopal Vinayak Godse. He was the younger brother of Nathuram Godse and one of the conspirators in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948. He was the last among them to survive and lived his last days in Pune.
