1861 – The first public auction for tea was held in Calcutta.

1911 – Jana Gana Mana,” composed by Rabindranath Tagore, was sung for the first time at the Calcutta (now Kolkata) session of the Indian National Congress.

1945 – The IMF (International Monetary Fund) was established by 29 nations.

1962 – India and Pakistan begin negotiations over Kashmir.

1977 – The Congress party splits into two factions 2nf time, one supporting and one opposing Indira Gandhi.

1992 – The Central government decides to acquire the disputed area in Ayodhya.

2007 – Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is assassinated by a suicide bomber.

Born…. 1796 – Mirza Ghalib (Asadullah Baig) ,  great Urdu, Hindi  and Persian  poet and writer.  Born in Agra but later shifted to  the Bahadur Shah Zafar’s Darbar,  lived in Chandni Chowk, Old  Delhi and Lahore. He  was awarded  with Dabir-ul-Mulk, Nazm-ud-Daul, Mirza Nosha and  other titles  for his  Shaayari,  mostly  romantic  and  sarcasm over  social life  in those  days. His house in Chandni Chowk  Delhi is now converted as his memorial.

1822 – Louis Pasteur, French chemist who became a founder of microbiology. He created and tested vaccines for diphtheria, cholera, yellow fever, plague, rabies, anthrax, and tuberculosis.

1955 – Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar.  Indian  crime boss, terrorist  reported to have set up a crime and Black money empire called D-Company,  in Mumbai and committed several terror acts in collaboration with Pakistan’s  anti-India groups and ISI in 1970s onwards. He fled  to Dubai in 1986 when  Indian police  teams tried to catch him and prosecute for his anti-India  deeds. He is  now  believed to be living in Pakistan.

1965 – Salman Khan,  popular Bollywood actor mostly in romantic and rebellious  roles. Son of former script writer Salim Khan  (Salim-Javed  pair), started his film carrier with  Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988) and then Maine Pyar Kiya, Patther Ke Phool, Saajan, Judwa, Hello Brother, Baaghi, Ek The Tiger, Bodyguard, Dabangg series  etc. over 125 films. He was  honored with 2 Filmfare and 2 National Film awards  and Zee Cine, Screen awards etc. He was rated as highest paid Bollywood actor by Forbes’  magazine between 2015-18.

RIP…. 1942 – Lance Naik Albert Ekka.  a  1971 Bangladesh   war hero.  He was killed in action on 3 Dec 1971 in the battle of Gangasagar. Was awarded the PVC.

1975 – One of India’s worst mining tragedies occurred at the Chasnala Colliery in Dhanbad. An explosion and subsequent flooding claimed the lives of 372 miners.

1976 – Yashpal, modern Hindi litterateur born in  Bhumpal village of  present Hamirpur Distt. of Himachal Pradesh. A freedom fighter who wrote many books and articles on social, travel, political, revolutionary  subjects. His famous story  books were  Pinjre Ki Udaan, Teri Meri Uski Baat, Jhuttha Sachch, Vatan Aur Desh, Dada Kamred, Desh Ka Bhavishya etc.  He was jailed in 1932 for 6 years  for writing revolutionary  stories and novels. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1970 and Sahitya Akademy award in 1976.   (pic credit-starsunfolded.com).

2013 – Farooq Sheikh, a noted Bollywood actor.  A philanthropist and television presenter who  was best known for his work in Hindi films from 1973 to 1993 and for his work in television between 1988 and 2002.  His major films were Garam Hawa,   Noorie,  Chasme Baddoor, Umrao Jaan, Bazaar,  Tumhari Amrita,  Shatranj Ke Khilari,  Yeh Jawaani Hai Deevani, Maya Memsaab,  Gharwali Baharwali,  Lahore, and  serials Shrikant,  Param Vir Chakra, Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai,   etc. ,  He won a National Film Award and Satyajit Rai Lifetime Achievement award.
