1934 – Mahatma Gandhi quits Indian Indian National Congress in struggle over tactics.

1939 – Nylon stockings go on sale for first time in Wilmington, Delaware.

1945 – UNO Day to commemorate the day of establishment of  United Nations Organisation in 1945. There were 51 members of UNO then, mainly  United States, Britain, Soviet Union, France  and the Republic of  China  under Chiang Kai Shek  (before Communists lead by Mao Tse Tse Dong took over and pushed  the old rulers to Taiwan ).

1975 – Bonded labour system was abolished in India by Ordinance.

1984 – First Metro Train (Underground Train) in India started between Esplanade and Bhowanipore in Calcutta city.

Born….  1914 – Captain  Lakshmi Sahga,l Freedom fighter and social activist , . She commanded the  Mahila Brigade of Azad Hind Fauz (INA), in Singapore and Burma front. Born in Malabar distt. of  Konkan region,  daughter of a lawyer working in Madras High Court, social worker. She did MBBS  degree  but shifted to Singapore after marriage. There she joined  Netaji Subhas Bose’s  movement for Freedom of india and faught on Burma border.  She was tried by the British but released after public  cry in support of INA. She joined CPI )M) in 1971 and  kept engaged in raising voice  on social issues  of the country.  She also acted in so me filoms based on INA struggle.

She faught Presidential election against APJ Abdul Kalam as Left Parties  candidate but lost.  She was honoured with Padma Vibhushan by Indian govt. in 2010 and Hony. Doctorate by Calicut University.  She died on July 23, 2012.

RIP…. 1991 – Ismat Chughtai, famous Urdu author, social worker and campaigner for justice for women. Born  as  9th  of the 10 children of  a vcivil servant Mirza Qasim Baig  Chughtai,   in  Badayun (U.P.),  she was  a leftist thinker and activist. She wrote against many myths in  Hindu and Muslim relegious books and  faced much  social opposition. Some of her novels like Lihaaf, Ziddi, Tedhi Lakir etc. were adapted into films by KA Abbas and on theatre stage too.

You may haveknown…. While India has seen a steady decline in child marriage, millions of girls remain affected, with rates remaining high in certain states. Data shows a strong correlation between child marriage and lower education levels, poverty, and residence in rural areas.
