1708 – British East India Company and New East India company merged.

1836 – Madras Chamber of Coimmerce was established by 8 businessmen under chairmanship of J. A. Arbuthnot and  J. W. Dare of Parry & Co., W. S. Binny of Binny & Co. as prominent members (pic credit-madrasmings.com).

1977 – India and Bangladesh signed settlement for distributing Ganga river water.

1981 – Delhi-Srinagar Indian Airlines Boeing 737 flight was diverted to Lahore, Pakistan by five Khalistan activists of the Dal Khalsa International. On board there were 117 passengers out of which 66 were freed on arrival in Lahore.

1993 – National Human Rights Commission set up.

2000 – CK Nayudu Lifetime Acheivement  award goes to former India cricket captain Lt. Col. Hemu Adhikari.

2016 – The Indian Army carried out its first surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control in Pakistan, a major geopolitical event.

Born…. 1906 – Chaudhary  Chhajju Ram (Lamba), social worker,  philanthropist and teacher from Bhawani distt. in old Punjab (now Haryana). He shifted to Calcutta for business and  made big fortune, used it for  noble causes. he was an Arya Samaji and financed studies of students like Sir Chhotu Ram. Called  Danveer Bhamashah by his followers and  was also  honoured with Sir decoration by the British (pic credit-www.redit.com).   

RIP….1913 – Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel, a German engineer who invented the internal-combustion engine that bears his name.

1928 – Brajesh Mishra. former diplomat, politician and NSA during  PM Atal Behari Vajpayee govt. 1998- 2004  (also dealt with Pokhran  Nuclear Tests and US policy drift against India).

1932 – Mehmood.  Highly talented Bollywood  comedian, singer,  producer and director. He debuted in  film Kismat,  Andaaz Apna Apna and is known for  roles in Padosan, Brahamchari, Aarjoo, Do Phool, Do Bigha Zamin, Pyaasa, CID,  Nadaan, Sanyasi,  Funtoosh,  Chhote Nawan, Shriman Shrimati, Hamjoli,  Kunwara Baap,  and Mein Sunder Hoon etc.  He won to 8  Filmfare awards and several nominations  to other industry awards.

1957 – Darshan Jariwala-popular film  and TV serial actor known for roles in Gandhi, My Father, Raajneeti, Be-Yaar etc. He won a National Film awards and several accolades (pic credit-superstarsbio.com).

1970- Khushbu . popular fim, TV serial avtor, producer who has worked in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films. Won a National and several state film awards (pic credit-ar.inspiredpencil.com).

2017 – Tom Alter, Mussourie born  Bollywood actor, with American, German and Swiss missionary  ancestory.  Some of his family members retained Pakistan  citizenship but his parents  shifted to India after Partition of 1947. His roles in films Mrig Trishna, Charas, Laila Majnu, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Ham Kisi Se Kam Nahin, Saheb Bahadur, Ram Bharose, Channi, Atyachar, Naukri, Des Pardes, Kranti, Kudrat, Junoon, Gandhi, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and  TV serial  Bharat Ek Khoj  etc. He also some books and  for  some  journals apart from  Sports commentary. You may have known…. During the 2001-2011 decade, women engineers grew by 326%. In 2001, there were only about 4.8 lakh women engineers. This had exploded to over 20 lakh in 2011. Engineering has for long been dominated by men — there are over 52 lakh men in the profession, more than twice the number of women engineers  (pic credit-mymathews.com).
