1699 – Mirza Maharaja Jai Singh I, the founder of Jaipur kingdome and builder of the Jantar Mantar observatories in Delhi, ascended the throne of Amber. He was a Kuchhwaha Rajput and  was  later defeated and accepted Moughal supremacy. He defeated Shivji in a war in Purander, fighting  for Delhi’s  Badshah  Shah Jahan. 1851 – The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was officially established in Calcutta, becoming one of the oldest organisations of its kind in the world.

1868 – A stapler was patented in Birmingham, England by C.H. Gould.

1931 – Congress top leader  MK Gandhi agreed to discontinue the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Salt Satyagraha.

1949 – The Jharkhand Party is founded. The party was established to advocate for a separate state and regional identity for the tribal population of the Chota Nagpur plateau.

1995 – India and China agree to open two new border points including Nathu La (Sikkim) to facilitate meetings between their military personnel.

1999 – Geet Sethi won the 1999 World matchplay Billiards Championship in Midsomer Norton.

2018 – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un meets South Korean leader Moon Jae-in  the first time since taking office, It  took place in the neutral zone of Panmunjom, the site of the armistice that ended large-scale fighting in the Korean war in 1953. 2025 – Manufacture of bone tools by ancient humans is pushed back a million years by the discovery of a 1.5 million year old cache of bone tools in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

Born…. 1911 – Subroto Mukerjee, the first Indian Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force (April 1, 1954 -Nov. 8, 1960).  Educated in Calcuttra and England, he won severasl military honour and OBE from British Govt. and Air Marshall by Indian govt. His wife Sharda  Mukerjee was active in politics later and was elected to Lok Sabha twice. She was appointed Governor of  Andhra Pradersh and Gujarat in 1977.

1916 – Biju Patnaik, the legendary aviator, freedom fighter, also  played  crucial role in Indonesian freedom struggle when he took off in a military aircraft  Douglas C-47  (Dakota), with Indonesian political leaders such as Sjahrir and Sukarno from Jakarta, for a secret meeting with Nehru at New Delhi and brought them   via Singapore on 24 July 1947.[  He was Chief Minister of Odisha twice and Lok Sabha member 1979 – 85 and became Union Steel & Mines minister. His son Navin Patnaik also served as Odisha CM for several terms.

RIP….1992 – Sunder (Singh), the Lahore born comedy actor who acted  in about 436  Hindi and Punjabi films  including  Mastana-1954, Lal Qila,  Veer Kesari, Sipahi,  Albela, Shadi Ke Baad,  Dekh Kabira Roya,  Dulla Bhjatti, Biwi-O-Biwi,  Yamla Jatt, Sassi Pannu, Choran Nu More,  Upkar,  Sadhu Aur  Shaitan, Phool  Aur Patther Bahurani etc.

1995 – Jalal Agha, famous comedian and character artist. Son of a popular comedian Agha, he  acted in Mughal-e-Azam, Bombai Raat ki Baahon Mein,  Sholey, Julie, Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani, Saat Hindustani, Saara Akaash, Thodi Si Bewafai etc.

You may have known…. India has the largest postal network in the world, working perfectly since last 150 years,  with over 1,55,015 post offices. A single post office on an average serves a population of 7,175 people. A floating post office in Dal Lake, Srinagar, was inaugurated in August 2011.
