1776 – The first U.S. submarine built for wartime use, the American Turtle, was used in New York harbour to attach explosives to the hull of the Eagle, Admiral Howe’s flagship. The submarine, just large enough for one occupant, was operated by turning a 24-inch diameter, two-bladed wooden propeller giving up to 3 knots speed.

1822 – A treadmill was completed to grind corn at the New York City Prison employing the labour of 8 to 16 prisoners at a time walking on what looked like a very wide, 5-ft diam. paddle wheel. Prisoners held on to a bar and climbed the paddle boards, like endlessly walking up stairs.

1948 – The first rubberized asphalt road surface in the U.S. was applied. However, by 1959, wear was judged to be no better   than less expensive asphalt alone, and rubber additive is no longer used.

1965 – China announces that it will reinforce its troops in the Indian border.

1965 – U.S. suspends military aid to India and Pakistan.

1993 – India and China sign border peace accord.

1997 – Banned Maoist Communist Centre guns down at least 30 CPI (M) liberation activists, including district committee members and workers, at Ankendar village, 40 km from the district headquarters of Chapra in Bihar.

1999 – India rejects Pakistan demand for an East Timor type of referendum in Kashmir.

2010 – Indian trade unions declare a general strike to protest a hike in fuel prices.

2012 – Investments to and from Pakistan began to be permitted by the Reserve Bank of India.

2022 – Discovery of the earliest evidence of surgery from a 31,000-year-old skeleton with an amputated lower leg in a cave in East Kalimantan, Borneo, published in “Nature”.

Born….   1933 – Ela Bhatt.  Famous Gandhian thinker, socialite,  co-operative movement activist. Founded Self-Employed Women’s association of India and remained its Gen. Secreary from 1972 – 1996. awarded Padma Bhushan, Raman Magasayasay Award, Indira Gandhi award for Peace, Disarmament and Development.

1951 –  Mammootti  (Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil  Ismael)  Kerala  and Tamil film actor,   producer. Acted in about 400 films, like Anubhavangal, Ahimsa, Aa Rarthri,  Madhura Raja, etc. He has won 3 National Film awards, 15 Filmfare South awards and many Kerala state awards and other accolades. He was  also  honoured  with Padma Shri  award by  Govt. of  India.

1961 – Minaketan Das. Oriya Comedy film actor known for roles in  Idiot, Only Tumse, I Love You, Augstya, I Do Ishq Only,  Prem Weds Priya etc.

1963 – Neerja Bhanot, Flight attendant. (She was a purser for Pan Am, who was shot and killed while saving hundreds of passengers on board a  Pan Am plane which terrorists had hijacked – Pan Am Flight 73 – on 5 September 1986. Was awarded Ashok Chandra).

Sachin Pilot1977 – Sachin Pilot, Rajasthan Congress  politician from Tonk assembly seat.  Son of Rajesh Pilot former central minister and friend of  Ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi.  He was elected  to Lok Sabha in 2004 (being also the youngest)  and 2009, from Dausa. . He lost from Ajmer seat in 2014.  He was awarded Honorary Captain  rank in 2012.  Sachin was Dy. Chief Minister in  Rajesh Gehlot govt. in the state.

1983 – Jwala Gutta,   popular badminton player born in Wardha  to a Chinese mother and Telugu father.  Her grandfather was a Chinese  Gandhian  Zeng and grandmother translated Gandhian literature into Chinese during 1977-80.  She has played 316 international matche victories in Singles and Doubles categories.  She won a Silver in 2009 Superseries Masters, 2011 world Championship, She ranked No. 10 in BWF World Rankings in 2015.

1985 – Radhika Apte, Indian theatre, film and TV actress. Debuted in a fantassy  drama role in Vah Life Ho To Aisi, then in a Bengali film Antheen. Her films Badlapur, Hunterr, Phobia,  Manjhi-thhe Mountain Man won her more acclaim. Also appeared in Netflix  soaps  Lust Series, Sacred Games, Ghoul, Raat Akeli Hai, Monicka. O My Darling,  A Call to Spy,  Sister Midnight  etc. She was nominated to Emmy Awards and British Independent Awards. Radhika won Indian Film Festival  of  Los Angeles, Tribeca Film Festival, Lokmat Stylish award and many  more.
