1889 – John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish inventor, was issued a patent for his pneumatic tyre.

1945 – Microwave oven patented by Raytheon Manufacturing Company of America (invented by their employee Percy Spencer, a Navy  veteran)

1982 – The first person in the world to be executed by lethal injection; was African-American  Charles Brooks Jr. (also known as Shareef Ahmad Abdul-Rahim) in  Texas. He was convicted of murdering a 26 year old mechanic David P Gregory on Dec. 16, 1976.  (pic cre4dit-crimemagazine.com).

1992 – Religious riots swept across India in the wake of the destruction of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya yesterday. More than 800 people had been killed and hundreds injured. The violence had thrown the government into chaos. The army had been called out to restore order in Bombay, where street battles left 41 dead. The stock market had been closed down and Parliament forced to adjourn. Advani quit as the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha.

1993 – BJP leaders Advani, Joshi and Kalyan Singh arrested in connection with Ayodhya demolition case.

1997 – Professional Tennis  legend  Leander Paes  honoured   with ‘The Sportstar’ award. He has a record for winning  Davis  Cup with 93 victories over 30 years  stint in the  competition. He  has won 8 Doubles Grand Slams (pairing with Mahesh Bhupathi)  and 10 Mixed Doubles Grand Slams, apart from  5 Golds, 3 Bronze in Asian Games and a Bronze medal in Atlanta Olypmics in 1996 (only Indian/Asian to do).   Has been awarded Maj. Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and  Padma Bhushan  by Govt. of  India  in 2014.

2015 – US Presidential candidate Donald Trump proposes banning all Muslims from entering the US.

2020 – Coca-Cola named the world’s No. 1 plastic polluter, in Break Free From Plastic’s annual brand audit (pic credit-partners.24.com).

Born….1879 – Jatindernath Mukherjee , known as Bagha Jatin because he single handedly killed a Bengal Tiger.  He was a Freedom fighter and revolutionary of Bengal, who founded Jugantar Party,for  promoting India’s independence (pic credit-dailyasianage.com).

1889 – Dr. Radhakamal Mukherjee. Professor of Economics and Social Sciences, Vice Chancellopr of Lucknow Univ.  He propounded the Theory of Moral Values in Society and  held that a separation between fact and value was arbitrary. The facts and values could not be separated from each other in human interactions. Even a simple transaction was a value based or normatively conditioned behavior.

1921 – Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual successor of Bochasanwasi Akshar Purshottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). He renounced world at age 18 and was appointed Pramukh swami in 1950. He worked to sustain and spread  Hindu Sanatan Dharma and inspire people to live morally. He built 1100 Swaminarain temples in several places including  Gandhinagar Gujarat and Delhi.  He inspired 55,000 volunteers, initiated 900 Sadhus, visited villages across India and abroad and counselled 8,10,000 people and was known as ‘People’s Guru’ (pic credit-Wikipedia). 

RIP…. 1782 – Hyder Ali,  famous  warrior,  Commander of Krishnaraj Wodeyar -II  of Mysore Kingdom who fought many wars against  the British East India Co. and Marathas. He was de-facto king of Mysore and left  the   control  to his son Tipu Sultan, who is more famous as  a warrior but  controversial in  terrorising  the  majority Hindu population of the  Kingdom  of Mysore (pic credit-lookandlearn.com).

2011 – Harry Morgan. Popular Hollywood  actor who is known for roles in MASH, Col. Potter, The Flight of Dragon, Sparkling Cynide, DragnetThe Incident, Against Her Will, Family Plan etc. during his 60 years long  film career. He was awarded Emmy and other cine awasrds.

You may have known…. 1.  Of the 126 countries, India’s GFP (Global Fire Power index) is at 4th position and China’s is at 3rd. (An annual ranking that assesses the military strength of countries over 60 factors, including manpower, defence budgets, equipment, logistics, and geography, to create a comprehensive and comparable score for each nation’s conventional military capability. A lower score indicates a greater overall fighting capability.       

2.  The tallest man in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence is Robert Pershing Wadlow of USA. (born 22 February 1918), who when last measured on 27 June 1940, was found to be 2.72 m (8 ft 11.1 in) tall, also called Alton Giant . He lived  for only 28 yeatrs until  July 15, 1940.
