1708 – Coronation of Maratha ruler Shahu Maharaj. Also  known as Rajrishi,  Shahu was the  first Maharaja  of Kolhapur.

1757 – Britain seized the Bandel province in West Bengal from the
Portuguese.

1779 – Battle of Wadgaon (Jan 12-13) occurred. It was a significant Maratha victory over the British East India Company during the First Anglo-Maratha War.

1908 – A wireless message was sent long-distance for the first time from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. (On top of the Ieffel Tower there is and exact replica of Gustave Eiffel’s office in which wax figures of Eiffel, his daughter and American inventor, Thomas Edison are placed. Edison is represented giving Eiffel a gift of a gramophone).

1934 – Freedom fighter Surya Sen, who led the Chittagong Armoury Raid, was executed by the British.

1948 – Mahatma Gandhi’s Last Fast. Gandhi commenced his final fast in Delhi to promote communal harmony following the partition of India.

1950 – The “United Provinces” was officially renamed Uttar Pradesh.

1990 – Upper age limit for Civil Services Examination raised from 26 to 28 years.

1996 – Supreme Court holds that Horse Racing is not gambling, but a game of skill.

2021 – Supreme Court puts on hold three controversial new farm laws that ignited weeks of protests by farmers in Delhi.                                                                                                                                                                                           Born…. 1399 – Kritiwas Ojha, writer of Ramayana in Bengali language in about 5,000 verses while Balmiki Ramayan has 24,000 verses.. Kritiwas (1381-1461)  was a Bengali  poet, writer and  spitual  mentor,  religious  speaker.                                                                                                                   1598 – Rajmata Jijabai. The mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, was born in Buldhana, Maharashtra. Jijabai Shahaji Bhonsale, also called  Rajmata Jijabai, or Jijamata. She was a daughter of Lakhujirao Jadhav of Sindkhed Raja. He belonged to the lineage of Devagiri Yadavas  (pic credit-pinterest.com).

1863 – Swami Vivekananda. Born Narendranath Datta in Kolkata, he became a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.  He was a a saint, philosopher, author, and prominent disciple of Swamy Ramakrishna.

He addressed  Parliament of World  Religions  in Chicago in 1893 in Hindi  and mesmirised  the audience with his eloqence  and  highlighting  the basic principle of Vasudhev Kutumbkam  of Indian culture. 1911 – Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, spiritualist, developer of the Transcendental Meditation technique. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was the creator of Transcendental Meditation and leader of the worldwide organization that has been characterized in multiple ways, including as a new religious movement.

1918 – . C Ramchandra (Chitalkar), famous film music director. His classic  music rendition for films  Subah Ka Tara, Azad, Anarkali, Anchal, Aastha, Amar Rahe Ye Pyar,  Ahinsa, Albela, Amardeep, Rutha Na Karo etc. He won 8 National Film Awards and 40 State  awards.

Priyanka Gandhi1972 – Priyanka Gandhi Vadra,  Congress politician, daughter of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. She had been earlier  active in Uttar Pradesh politics and  has won Lok Sabha  election from Vayanad, Kerala in 2024 after Rahul Gandhi resigned his second seat.

1973 – Sakshi Tanwar, TV serial and film  actor. She has acted in Balaji Tele serials like Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Tyohaar Ki Thaali etc and films like Dangal, Sharmaji Ki Beti, Mohalla Assi, Dial 100, Ghar Ki Murgi etc.  She has won many awards like ITA, Indian Telly, Star Parivar awards

RIP…. 1897 – Sir Isaac Pitman, English inventor of the Phonetic Shorthand Systems.

1992 – Kumar Gandharva (Shivputra Siddharamaiya Komkali), famous Indian Classical vocal  singer with typical  style. He was awarded Padam Bhushan in 1977.

 2004 – Ramakrishna Hegde, former Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was part of Janta Party in 1977 earlier and later joined JD (U) and became Chief Minister with NJP support from outside. He waas also Chairman of Planning Commission and Mionisyer of Commerce & Indiustry under PM Vajpayee in 1998-99.

2005- Amrish Puri. Legendary Bollywood villain, known  for  roles  in Indian Jones and the filoms like  Manthan, Nishant,  Mr. India,  Karan Arjun,Nayak, Gadar, Hulchal, Diljale etc. He won three  Filmfare, Screen and  other  awards.                                                                                                      You may have known….
Shaving habits: Lacking more advanced tools, the first people brave enough to maintain their facial hair did so with seashells that essentially functioned as tweezers — they only pulled their hair out. More primitive method of shaving lasted longer than most of us would like to imagine.
