(This day marks the founding of Air India International, a key moment in the history of Indian aviation).

1910 – Elise Deroche (Baroness de Laroche) bacame the first woman to be issued a pilot’s license by the Aero Club de France. She had made her first solo flight in 1909. 1911 – 1st International Women’s Day. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

1920 – The final report of the Hunter Commission, which investigated the 1919 Amritsar massacre, was released. The report unanimously condemned General Dyer’s actions as a “grave error”.

1965 – 1st U.S. combat forces. 3,500 Marines arrive in Vietnam. (Direct U.S. military involvement ended on 15 August 1973).

1994 – B737 collides with Ilyushin-86 in New Dehli, at least 8 killed.                          2009 – India Golfer Jyoti Randhawa wins Thailand Open Golf tournament.           2013 – In line with Women’s Empowerment Initiatives, Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College, North India’s first government medical college for women, was inaugurated.

2015 – A report is released on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370, one year after the incident, revealing that the flight’s locator beacon battery had expired a year before the flight, but nothing unusual was otherwise detected (pic credit-simlyflying.com).

2018 – In a landmark legal judgment, the Supreme Court of India allowed “passive euthanasia” under strict guidelines, recogsizing the “right to die with dignity” as a fundamental right.

2023 – 171 trillion pieces of plastic now litter the world’s oceans, increasing from 16 trillion in 2005, estimate scientists from Gyres Institute.

Born…. 1921 – Sahir Ludhiyanvi, famous film lyricist. Sahir Ludhianvi is the pen name of Abdul Hayee who is popularly known as Sahir. He was a poet and film lyricist who wrote/sung  about 770 songs in the Hindi and Urdu languages during 1960s to 80s. His work influenced Indian cinema. (It is said, he had an unfulfilled love relationship with Amrita Pritam (pic credit-amarujala.com and Video credit-Shemaroo music)).

1953 – Vasundhara Raje, the first female Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 2023,  a prominent BJP leader.princess of Gwalior state. married to Yuvraj Hemant Singh of Dholpur, was elected to Lok Sabha from Jhalwar, Rajasthan 5 times  and  became minister in AB Vajpayee govt. in 1998. . She’s is now one of the National Vice Presidents of Bhartiya Janta Party since 2019.

1975 – Fardeen Khan, Bollywood  actor/producer,  son of veteran Bollywood star Feroz Khan.  Is known for films like Fida, Pyar Tune Kya Kia,  Prem Agan, No Entry,  Khel Khel Main, Acid Factory, Life Partner etc. (pic credeit-hamaraphotyos.com)

1989 – Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s national cricket team.  Has  won matches with her all-round game. She scored 171 against Aussie women in 2017 ODI World Cup.  She has played 6 Tests, 141 ODIs, 178 T-20s  and taken 75 wickets in all formats. Was awarded Arjuna award in 2017.

RIP…. 1535 – Rani Karnavati, the legendary Queen of Mewar, known for her courage and the act of Jauhar during the siege of Chittorgarh.  Aarlier she defeated  Moughals, and cut off their noses after they surrendered (pic credit-ashokchaudhary.com).                                                                                               Titbits…. 1968 – 6 year old Tommy Moore scores hole-in-one in golf (Hagerstown, Maryland).      You may have known….India has won all 5 men’s Kabaddi World Cups held till now and have been undefeated throughout these tournaments. The Indian women’s team has also won all Kabaddi World Cups held till date.
