1644 – Louis XIV of France inaugurated the Palace of Versailles.
1660 – Isaack B Fubine of Savoy, in The Hague, patents macaroni. Macaroni is a variety of dry pasta in the shape of narrow tubes. If cut in lengths with a curve it is usually called elbow macaroni. The name comes from Italian maccheroni, plural form of maccherone. The academic consensus supports that the word is derived from the Greek makaria, a kind of barley broth which was served to commemorate the dead.

1878 – Joseph.R. Winters, US, received a patent for a fire escape ladder.

1834 – East India Company annexed Coorg , Mysore (now  Karnataka).  Raja Veer Rajendra, who was a cruel ruler, after formally declaring a war had captured Durg State.

1849 – Bethune College of Calcutta was established for the upper class Girls and it was started for female education.

1907 – The First Electric Tramway service commenced in Bombay. This service was inaugurated by Municipality Chairman Vallabhdas Thakersey and Municipal Commissioner Sheppard at 5.30 p.m. This tram was well decorated and destined from Municipal Office upto Crawford Market.

1954 – Indo-China War: The Battle of Dien Bien Phu ends in a French defeat and a Vietnamese victory (the battle began on March 13).

1990 – Foundation stones are laid in Ayodhya for a new temple at the birthplace of Lord Rama as Hindu nationalism rises. Government disallows the Shilanyas.

1990 – Government of India bans strikes in any service in any oil field or refinery under the Essential Services Maintenance Act.

1998 – Mercedes-Benz buys Chrysler for US$ 40 billion USD and forms Daimler Chrysler in the largest industrial merger in history.

2014 – Russian president Vladimir Putin bans cursing in creative works and media outlets, with fines on individuals and companies for using bad language; the stated purpose of the law is to protect Russian language and culture.

2017 – Film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion , with a total domestic gross  collection of ₹1,429.83 crores  broke a number of domestic records. Dangal (2016), which is the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide, was the previous highest-grossing domestic film, with a domestic gross of ₹538.03 crore (pic credit-IMDb.com).

2020 – Toxic leak at Indian chemical factory near Visakhapatnam kills at least 13 and injures many when it tried to reopen after lockdown.

2022 – Afghan women issued decree to cover their faces in public (hijab reaching head to toe) by Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, or her male guardian faces criminal punishment.

2025 – India launches Operation Sindoor  thru’ airstrikes on multiple locations (09) on Pakistan border (Noor Khan, Muridke, Bahawalpur etc.), killing several  ultras and their trainers,  the strikes lasting just 52 minutes,  early in the  morning from 01.07 a.m.  The operation was a well meditated and coordinated  strike by Indian  Air Force, Army  and Navy to take a revenge of  April 22, 2025  massacre of 26+ innocent  Indian civilian tourists  in Pahalgam (Kashmir)  by Pak trained ultras. There was a big uproar amoung Indian  citizens to  take a proper  revenge on Pakistan.  On retaliatiatory attempts  by Pak  Air  Force Indian  air Force struck back at  11 of their military  Air bases like Noor Khan,and  others. The Operation Sindoor  was halted by Govt. of India  on May 10,  following  an SOS request  by  Pak  DGMO  to his  Indian counterpart. American President D Trump claimed to have brokered ceasefire but Indian Govt. denied any role of any  foreign  person  or third  party.    (PM  Modi also addressed the Nation on  May 12)   

Born…. 1711 – David Hume, Scottish philosopher, author, historian, economist, lawyer and judge. Wrote books on Criminal law,  Also wrote thesis on human history and philosophy.

1861 – Guru Dev Rabindranath Thakur alias Tagore, novelist, painter, educationist and freedom fighter; Won Nobel Prize for his epic collection of poems  Gitanjali Ghare, in 1913. Other works are Baire Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata Gora Jana Gana Mana Rabindra Sangeet Amar Shonar Bangla  etc.

RIP…. 2001 – Prem Dhawan, well-known story-writer, lyricist, music composer and cherographer. Famous songs for Shaheed, Pavitra Papi, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar, Dhanna Bhagat Jeet etc.

2021 – Vanraj Bhatia,. popular lyricist, composer. Provided music for Sardari Begum, Surkhiyan, Junoon, Mandi, Tamas, Pardes,Ankur, 36 Chourangee Lane,  Ramayana animation series etc. (pic credit-Hindustan Times)

RIP….1950 – Punjab Mail train crashed near Jasidh killing 81 persons.

Titbits…. 1953 – A record 537-kg swordfish is caught by LE Marron, in Chile.

You may have known….
A City   named : “JHUMRI TALAIYA”   actually  exists in Jharkhand State of India.
