1905 – First Partition of Bengal, which was proposed by Lord Curzon, was accepted by British Government’s Minister of India. Present day states of Assam, Meghalya, Nagaland, Tripura etc. were part of East Bengal, later divided into East Pakistan in 1947 (and became independent Bangladesh in 1971 War (above video credit-YouTube.com). 

1957 – India’s biggest sheet-glass manufacturing factory formally opened in Hazaribagh, Bihar.

1969 – Apollo XI astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. Armstrong stepped on the lunar surface and proclaimed, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Internationally, nearly 700 million television viewers witnessed the event live as it happened.

1976 – America’s “Viking I Lander” spacecraft, launched 20 Aug 1975, made its successful, first-ever landing on Mars at Chryse Planitia, and began transmitting pictures.

1989 – Burma government puts author and revolutionary leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest.

2000 – In a nationwide swoop, IT Department officials search the residences of cricketers Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and former ICC Chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya and recover incriminating documents.

2020 – Cristiano Ronaldo (Santos Aveiro)  becomes first man to score 50 goals in Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League with a double in Juventus’ 2-1 win over Lazio. Ronaldo is a Portugese professional player who has played for various European Soccer clubs and had been top ranker for several years and won top awards. He is believed to have scored over 900 Goals  in about 1200 International matches. His net worth is $ 600 million.

2022 – Geranium, a meat-free restaurant in Copenhagen, is named world’s best restaurant at a ceremony in London.

2023 – Video of serious mob assault on two women in Indian state of Manipur has “shamed India” claims PM Narendra Modi (pic credit-firstpost.com).

Born….  1531 –   Mahakavi Tulsidas, Most reerred Hindu  Saint who wrote Ramcharit Manas, the Ramayana in Sanskrit/Hindi Shlokas. He studied Vedas, Upnishdas in Varanasi and write Ramcharit Manas there. It is said Hanumanji inspired him to write Bhagwan  Ram story  and Shri Ram blessed him after it was completed.

1950 – Naseeruddin Shah, veteran actor who started with  Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and did many famous roles in films  viz., Sarfarosh, Gentleman, Iqbal, A Wednesday, Monsoon Wedding. He has won several film awards and Padma Bhushan honour. In recent years he has been issuing controversial statements against Ruling party and safety of minorities in India, and  has got  pubic condemnations.

1980 – Gracy Singh,  popular  Bollywood, Telugu   and  Television actor. Gained popularity  for  roles in Lagaan,  Munna Bhai  MBBS,  Santosham. She is  also  a Bharat  Natyam  dancer. She was nominated for  Fimfare  and  won  IIFA,  Screen,   Zee Cine  awards.
RIP….  1972 – Geeta Dutt, legendary  Bollywood actor and classical Hindi/Bengali  singer. She acted/sang  in Jogan, Bhagat Prahlad, Kaala Bazaar, Aar Paar, Pyaasa, C.I.D., Baazi etc. She married veteran actor/director Guru Dutt and had two sons and daughter. She died at young age of  41.
