1959 – Chinese military confrontation with India in Aksai Chin killed 17 Indian soldiers in a clash on the Kashmir border.
1998 – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat agree to the Wye River Memorandum, resuming implementation of the stalled Oslo II Accord which established a level of self-overnment for Palestine; signed at the White House, In Washington (Pic credit-CNN).
Born…. 1923 – Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the 11th Vice President of India. He joined Bhartiya Jansangh in 1950 after resigning a police job and represented Sikar and other constituencies in the assembly from 1952-2002, became Chief Minister three times. He was elected Vice President in August 2002 and contested Presidential eklection in 2007 as independent with NDA support against UPA’s Pratibha Patil. Following defeat, he resigned VP’s post. He was called Rockfeller of India for implementing Antodaya program. Alsomopposed Sati Pratha and other social evils. He was honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2003.
1954 – Ang Lee. Taiwanese actor, producer/director. Has 12 best selling movies to his credit, like Life of Pi, Hulk, Brokeback Mountain, Lust, Caution, Gemini Man etc. Has won 3 Academy, 4 BAPTA, and 3 Golden Globe awards ( pic credit: Apega/WENN.com)
1957 – Sunil Bharti Mittal, Indian telecom enterpreneur. He co-founded Bharati Group of industries (Bharti Airtel, Bharati Entreprises, Airtel TV, Digital and a Foundation) alongwith his brother Rakesh Bharti Mittal. Company later expanded into insurance, real estate, education and hospitality etc. Has a net worth of US$ 1280 crore and has business expansion into S. Africa and other overseas areas. He was honored with Padam Bhushan in 2007.
RIP –1921 – John Boyd Dunlop, Scottish inventor who was a pioneer of the pneumatic tyre. 1962 – Sub Joginder Singh (Sikh Regiment) was martyred while defending Bum La Pass on Indo-Chinese border in Arunchal Pradesh. He refused to vacate Indian position and was outnumbered by enemy forces. He died in Chinese captivity but his ashes were received in an Urn with full military honours on May 17, 1963. He was awarded posthumously Param Vir Chakra, the highest Military honour.
Bharat Ratna awarded (2019) – Bhupen Hazarika, Legendary musician, singer, songwriter and politician of Assam who sang many popular folk and film songs in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi viz.,Indramalati, Shakuntala, Pratidhwani, Debdas, Gaj Gamini, Do Raahen, Chameli Mem Saheb etc. He was honoured with Bharat Ratna, Dadasaheb Phalke, Sangeet Natak Akademy award and its Chairmanship and several other state music/literature awards.
You may have known…. Baptism: Rituals involving the literal or symbolic immersion in water, take place in several religious traditions and at different points in a person’s life.
