1864 – Most of Calcutta destroyed by cyclone (approx 60,000 die).

1914 –  First aerial combat resulting in a kill – in World War I.

1993 – CBI chargesheets 40 in Ayodhya case. LK Advani, MM Joshi and Bal Thackeray were among the accused.

1993 – Geet Sethi retained World Billiards title by beating Mike Russel.

1997 – Dr. Kalpana Chawla became the first Indian woman to become an astronaut. Karnal (Haryana) born US citizen later died in her third space mission in Columbia Shuttle disaster  in 2003.

1997 – Kiran Bedi, India’s first woman police officer, was awarded the Joseph Beuys prize for her work in reforming the largest prison of the country. Born in Amritsar on June 9, 1949, Kiran became the First Indian IPS officer in 1975, rose to be IGP Chandigarh. When she was denied to become Commissioner Delhi due to Congress Party politics, nshe resigned  and later was appointed LG Puducherry.  She is credited for bringing Jail Reforms in Tihar, Delhi and  founding  IVF. for police reforms.

Born….  1524 – Rani Durgavati. She was a valiant queen of the Gond kingdom. She is celebrated for her resistance against the Mughal Empire and is remembered as a symbol of bravery and courage in Indian history.

1923 – Kailashpati Mishra, a politician, was a lprominent eader of Jana Sangh  (now Bhartiya Janata Party)  from Uttar Pradesh. He took part in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was arrested for the same. He was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh from 1943 and was even jailed after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. While studying in class X,  Kailashpati Mishra was arrested for picketing at the main gate of his school at Buxar in support of the 1942 Quit India Movement. He served as Finance innKarpoori Thakur ministry in 1977 and became Governor of  Gujarat and Rajasthan in 2003-04.

1934 – Cho Ramaswamy  (Srinivasa Iyer). Was a famous Tamil, telugu, Kannada film  actor, comedian, editor,  political satirist. He acted in 180 films,  20 plays,  also wrote several books and pulished a journal called Thuglaq. He was nominated member of Rajya Sabha  (1999-2005) and a  sympathiser of  BJP (DMK alliance). He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2017 posthumously.

RIP….   1991 – Ramnath Goenka, journalist and founder chairman of the Indian Express Newspapers Group. He resisted  stoppage of  publishing his newspapers during Emergency 1975-77 by PM Indira Gandhi. He ran a crusade against hardship to  citizens during   Emergency  and censorship on newspapers. He was also elected to Lok Sabha from Vidisha  in 1971  on Bhartiya Jansangh ticket.

Yo may have known…. Data from 2011 showed 39.7 million people aged 70 and above, a figure that has been consistently increasing and will continue to rise due to improved life expectancy.
