1240 – The Mongol invasion of Russia  led to the fall of Kyiv to the Mongols,  a 3,200 miles away (5,100 km) .

1756 – British troops under Commander Robert Clive occupy Fulta,  Bengal, (East India).

1768 – 1st edition of “Encyclopedia Brittanica” published (Scotland).

1850 – Hermann von Helmholtz announced his invention, ‘An Eye mirror for the Investigation of the Retina of the Living Eye the ophthalmoscope’  (pic credi- Busca Biografias).

1877 – Thomas Edison demonstrated the first sound recording, reciting “Mary had a Little Lamb”, making the first surviving recording of the human voice.

1971 – US bars aid to India for  alleged  aggression against Pakistan. American President Richard M Nixon also sent the 7th Fleet of US Navy to help Pakistan  fight India.

1992 – A large group of Hindu nationalist activists (kar sevaks) associated with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demolished the 16th-century Babri Mosque in Ayodhya. The event was the culmination of a long socio-political dispute over the site, which many Hindus believe to be the birthplace of Lord Rama. The demolition triggered widespread communal riots across  India  leading to the deaths of over 2,000 people and having a lasting impact on Indian politics and society (pic credit-Sandeep Shakar via Getty Images) 

2017 – Starbucks opens its largest cafe in the world in Shanghai, 30,000 squar- e-feet, 1/2 size of a football field.

2017 – US President Donald Trump officially recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, announcing plans to move US embassy there from Tel Aviv. 7th Century Dome of Rock in Jerulaem is  a  UNESO  heritage monument. The  ancient city  under  Israel is considered as the holy place of worship for three  religions viz.,  Jews, Cristians and the Muslims.

2018 – Luxembourg is the first country to make all public transport free.  It is a landlocked country in Western Europe,  bordered by Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east  and France on the south. (pic credit-turkey-visit.com) 

Born….  1945 – Shekhar Kapur,  veteran Indian actor, director and  filmmaker.  Known for his creative direction  in Masoom, Mr. India, Bandit Queen, Elizabeth, Elizabeth:the Golden Age, What’s Love to Do, The Four Feathers, Paani and Viswaroopam-2 etyc. He was awa5rded Filmfare 3 Filmfare, 1 National award and several other accolades like BAFTA,  a Golden Globe nomination.

1988 – Rihaan Patel, Indian actor,  a motivated creative film director and producer, who produced his first film at 20 years age, like Dust of Orphan, Life Coloyursa Purity, The Burial of Daughters etc. He has won many awards and appreciations.

1988 – Ravindra Singh Jadeja,  an aggressive bowler and fielder.  He is member of Indian Teast team and ODIs. Also captained Chennai Super Kings in IPL format. He has taken 100 catches in IPL. and has been honored with Arjuna award in 2019.

RIP…. 1956 – Dr. Bhimji Ramji Ambedkar, Minister of Law and architect of The Constitution of India.1956 – Dr. Bhimji Ramji Ambedkar,  was an economist, jurist, social reformer and headed the committee that formulated the Indian Consitution. So he’s called the architect of The Constitution of India.  He did LLB  and Doctorate of Economics from  Univ. of London.  He converted to Buddhism on  Oct. 14, 1956 alongwith 3,65,000 followers,   after he  was annoyed  with Congress Govt. policies  on SC/ST and weaker sections of society.   This day is  commemorated annually as Mahaparinirvan Diwas.

2009 – Bina Rai,  most popular heroine of 1950s-1990s.  he acted in msany jubilee films like Anarkali, Aurat, Durgesh Nandini,  Kali Gata,  Taj Mahal, Bandi,  Insaniyat, Changez Khan etc. She married veteran actor Prem Nath. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film Ghunghat (1961).

Tidbits.….A man named Charles Osborne had the hiccups for 69 years. He  started hiccupping in 1922 while attempting to weigh a hog before slaughtering it.

You may have known…. India’s labour force is over 500 million people, with a rising Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) of 55.4% as of October 2025. The workforce includes both employed and unemployed work seekers. There is a notable increase in female participation, a decline in the unemployment rate to 5.2%, and shifts in sectoral employment, with rural agriculture and urban services seeing.
