(Every year on November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993).

1839 – Cyclone slams south eastern India with high winds and a 40 foot storm surge, destroying  city of Coringa across the shores of Madras Presidency (present day  Andhra Pradesh). Storm waves sweep the island near the mouth of Godavari River, destroying 20,000 ships and killing an estimated 300,000 people.

1834 – Allahabad High Court inaugurated. It was shfted to Agra in 1835 but  in 1875 it was shifted back to Allahabad (now Prayagraj).

1948 – National Cadet Corps was first established.

2009 – A Pakistan court charges seven suspects involved in the 2008 terrorist   attacks in Mumbai.

2021 – India has more girls than boys for the first time in  history, and its population boom is ending, according to a new government survey.

Born….1844 – Karl Friedrich Benz was a German mechanical engineer who designed and in 1885 built the world’s first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine.

1879 – Sri Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani (Sadhu Vaswani), professor, saint poet, great orator and prolific writer.  Born in Hyderabad (Sindh), he was the founder of Mira Movement for Education. As a young boy, he had converted to Christianity  in Bengal, but in 1907 after he studied Upnishdas and Vedas,  he  re-converted to Hindu/Sanatan  religion. He travelled to Berlin in  August 1910  alongwith his Guru Sri Promotholal Sen to attend Welt Congress (World Congress of  Religions). He participated in Mahatma Gandhi’s  call for Non-Cooperation Movement in 1940s  and migrated to Pune  (India) in 1948.  He wrote many books,  including India ArisenAwake, Young India!India’s AdventureIndia in ChainsThe Secret of AsiaMy MotherlandBuilders of Tomorrow; and Apostles of Freedom. He believed in vegetarianism, his borthday is celebrated as  Meatless Day by his followers.  Indian govt. issued a postal  stamp in his memory in 2011 and a Museum is built in Pune to spread his teachings.

1929 – Surinder Kaur,  Punjabi and Hindi folk  songwriter. She sang evergreen songs like Kala Doria, Bajre Da Sitta, Akhiyan ch Toon Vasda,  Chann Kithe Guzari ye Raat, Suhe we Cheere Waliya etc.  (Video credit-Saregama Music)  

1966 – Roopa Ganguli,  Bengali and Bollywood actor and BJP politician. Known for playing epic  role of Draupadi in BR Chopra’s TV serial Mahabharat telecast from October 02, 1988 onwards. Has been awarded National Film award for singing in Bengali film,  BFJA award,  Smita Patil awards and many more. (pic credit-filmibeat.com) 

1977 – Dilip Tirkey,  Former Indian Hockey  team captain who played in 400 over  International matched and 3 Olympics from 14996 onwards. He’s the current President of Hockey India and has been awarded Padam Shri (pic credit-Sambad English).

1978 – Rakhi Sawant, romantic and lively Bollywood and TV actor, dancer  and model. Acted in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu films like Joru Ka Gulam, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai, Dil Bole Hadippa, Mumbai Can  Dance Saala etc.  She has won some dance awards and appreciations… !

1982 – Jhulan Nishit Goswami, cricketer. With her superb bowling, she was known as ‘Nadia Express’. She is the highest wicket-taker in one-day international cricket.

RIP….  1975 – Chandulal Jaisinghbhai Shah, a famous director, producer and screenwriter of Hindi cinema. He established Ranjit Studios in 1929 in Bombay with help from  Vithaldas Thakoredas. His brother JD shah was a writer of mythological film scripts. Chandulal directed Vimla in 1925, Panch Danda, Madhav Kam Kundala later. He also worked for Bombay stock Exchange. He intruduced  legendary actress Sulochana in the film Typist Girl in 1926.  Some of successful film from his studio include Sati Savitri (1932), Barrister’s Wife (1935), The Secretary (1938), Achhut (1940), Tansen (1943), Moorti (1943) and Jogan (1950).  He directed first  film Paapi  with Raj Kapoor and Nargis in 1953 which didn’t  do well. Then he started investing in Horse Racing and lost all his fortune.  He was the first president of Film  Federation of India.

1984 – Yashwantrao B. Chavhan, first Chief Minister of Maharashtra  in 1956-62 and became Deputy Prime Minister under PM Chandhary Charan Singh. . He was close to Mrs Indira Gandhi during 1970-77 and worked as Minister for Home, Defence and External Affairs.

1987 – Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration, for his bravery in Sri Lanka (during IPKF operation against LTTE insurgency there).

You may have known…. India’s birth rate was 18.4 per 1,000 population in 2023, a decrease from 19.1 in 2022 and a significant drop from 36.9 in 1971. The rate remains higher in rural areas (20.3 in 2023) than in urban areas (14.9 in 2023).                                                                                                                                                                    2.  A hummingbird weighs less than a penny.
