1846 – Gun cotton patent. Christian Frederick Schönbein of Basle, Switzerland, was issued a U.S. Patent for guncotton titled “Improvement in Preparation of Cotton-Wool and Other Substances as Substitutes for Gunpowder”.

11929 – 1st U.S. nudist organisation (American League for Physical Culture, New York City).

1946 – Establishment of the Home Guard organisation in India.

1950 – Sikkim becomes a protectorate of India, a relationship that continued until its full merger into the Indian Union in 1975.  Mount Kangchenjunga at 8,586 m,  is second only to Mt. Everest,  (Tibet).

1990 – Salman Rushdie, author, ordered to death by Iran for blasphemy, appears in public for 1st time in 2 years. India  born author has written many bold but controversial novels like  Satanic Verses,   based  on  anomalies  Muslim  religion and traditions; Midnights Children  about  PM Indira Gandhi  imposed  Emergency in 1975-77.He  lives  in Britain.

Born…. 1905 – Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He was close to  PM Jawaharlal Nehru, initially  wanted J&K to remain as  independent state, though after Pak military clandstinely entered the state and the State merged with India, he  got himself the post of Prime Minister of  Jammu & Kashmir under special status Article 370 and  Nehru going to  UN for settling the issue.  His son Farooq and grandson Omar Abdullah have also been main poitical force and gained CM’s post most of the time.

1931 – Admiral Jayant G. Nadkarni, former Chief of Indian Navy from Dec. 01, 1987 to  Nov. 30, 1990.

1932 – Nadira,  Baghdad (Iraq) born  veteran Indian  film actress. She played memorable roles in films like  Aan,  Awara, Shri 420,  Barsaat,  Pakizaah, Hanste Zakham,   Julie, Josh etc.  between 1950- 2000. She has won  Filmfare Best Supporting Actress award in 1975 (film Julie(.

1935 – General Bipin Chandra Joshi,  was  16th  Chief of Indian Army from July 01, 1993 to Nov. 18, 1994.

1985 – Shikhar Dhawan,  former  Delhi  and India cricket team Captain is a left-hand  opening batsman. A great ODI cricketer, known as Gabbar Singh for his style and  comeback  grit. He has 7 Test 17 ODI and 30 First Class  centuries to his record.  Also played Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Charges  Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings I in IPL format. He was awarded Arjuna Puruskar in 2021 for sports.

RIP…. 1950 – Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, great revolutionary, freedom fighter and teacher.

2013 – Nelson Mandela, former South African President and an anti-Apartheid icon. He spent  27 years in British  jails  in South Africa for fighting for Blacks’ Rights.                                                                         2016 – Jayalalithaa, a renowned film actress turned influential politician and the six-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (14 years) between 1991 to 2012. Popularly known as Amma, she acted in mostly Tamil, Telugu, Kannada films opposite her mentor MG Ramachandran and NT Rama Rao. She  entered  politics  by splitting DMK alongwith MGR  and co-founded AIDMK.  She also pplayed crucial role in Central politics by supporting  AB Vajpayee led NDA govt. in 1998,though she withdrew sopport soon  leading to mid-term elections to Lok Sabha. Though NDA got  to form the govt. she stayed with the Opposition having won 10 Lok Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu.  She controlled AIDMK and MGR’s legacy but had many controversies Vs  MGR’s wife Janaki and later with her  close  friend   VS Sasikala  and cases of corruption. She had won several state film awards, Filmfare award  and international honours.
