1764 – Mir Qasim, with the backing of  Bengal emperor,  attacked on Patna but  was defeated by British Army. Britishers became the rulers of Bengal, then the  richest province of India. This was the beginning of British rule over India.

1913 – Raja Harishchandra the first full-length  Silent  feature film is released, marking the heralding of  Indian film industry. Dhundiraj Govind Phalke,  generally known as Dadasaheb Phalke, was responsible for the production of this four-reel feature film,  The film had titles in Hindi and English and was released at the Coronation Cinematograph in Bombay. Promotion statement for Raja Harishchandra read, “A performance with 57,000 photographs. A picture two miles long. All for only three annas.” Interestingly, those days females did not like acting. Phalke struggled to get a woman, including nautch girls, to agree to act in the film. Not succeeding, he had to cast a delicate-looking man to play the role of Queen Taramati, Harishchandra’s wife. Phalke discovered Salunke, who used to work in a restaurant as a cook, for this role. Salunke would later play the role of both Rama and Sita in Phalke’s 1917 film Lanka Dahan and become the most popular actor and actress of his time! (pic ccredit-mythgyaan.com)

1927 – Riots between Sikhs and Muslims in Lahore claims 14 lives and leaves 100 injured. This also led to riots in Nagpur and other areas (pic credit-alhakum.org). 

1931 – Completion of the Empire State Building, marking the pinnacle of architectural achievement during the Great Depression. Standing as the tallest building in the world at the time, its construction symbolized American resilience and ingenuity. 

1939 – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose formed the All India Forward Block  on May 03, 1939 in Makkur, Unnao (U.P.),  after he resigned Congress Party, following differences with MK Gandhi and Nehru.  It was later banned by the British in 1940 as a revolutionary  and violent outfit. 1944 – Dr. Robert Woodward and Dr. William Doering produced the first synthetic quinine at Harvard University

1945 – British-Indian forces captured Rangoon, Burma, from the  Japanese.

1947 – Indian National Trade Union Congress  (INTUC) was established.

1952 – The first airplane landed at the geographic North Pole.

2018 – Bollywood actors, both posthumously recognized at India’s National Film Awards; Sridevi Kapoor Best Actress for “Mum” and Vinod Khanna receives Dadasaheb Phalke award.

1968 – Dr. Denton Cooley of the Texas Heart Institute performed the first successful heart transplant in the United States on Everett Thomas.

1978 – International Sun Day – solar energy events  declared by  US President  Jimmy Carter, promoting use of Solar Power as a  renewable source of  energy for world and saving environment.

2022 – Heat wave continues across North and Central India disproportionally affecting the poor, with March and April temperatures the hottest ever recorded in 122 years.

2023 – Ajay Banga is elected President of the World Bank after being nominated by US President Joe Biden.

Born…. 1896 – V. K. Krishna Menon, lawyer, jurist, and politician. An eloquent speaker -he delivered the longest ever speech at the United Nations for over 8 hours between  Jan. 23-24, 1957, defending India’s position on Kashmir.   He was India’s  Dfence  Minister  during 1962 China attack on India. He was discredited for  Indian defeat alongwith Nehru’s  China policy. He had to resign from  the ministry.

1898 – Golda Meir. Popular Israeli teacher, author  (born in Ukraine), fiery leader who became 4th Prime Minister of the country (1969-74) 

1920 – Achala Sachdev, Peshawar  born veteran romantic Bollywood actor who  started  as a  child  actor  and  ended as a loving grandmother  thru’ over 240 films in 74 years,  like  Footpath, Sangam, Daag, A Poem of Love, Waqt, Chandni, Mera Naam Joker,  Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge etc.

1959 – Sadhvi Uma Bharti activist and politician (6 time Lok Sabha member), 16th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. She was one of the prominent leaders at Babri Masjid demolition sight on Dec. 06, 1992 and  was tried  in Courts alongwith several  BJP-Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal leaders.

RIP…. 1969 – Zakir Hussain, Indian academic and politician, 3rd President of India.

1981 – Nargis Dutt (born Fatima Rashid), film actress and a politician, who worked in Hindi cinema.  She started her acting career with the film Tamanna (1942) and acted in many films opposite Raj Kapoor viz.,  Aag,  Shree 420, Awara,  Barsaat, Chori Chori etc  She married popular actor Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt is her son.  Nargis got the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film Mother India in 1958,   National Film Award for Raat Aur Din  and was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1980..  She was the first film actress who got the Padma Shri title in 1958.

2006 – Pramod  V Mahajan, veteran Maharashtra and national  politician from BJP. Was minister of I&B  in Atal Behari Vajpayee’s NDA  cabinet. He had a tiff with his younger brother, who shot him on April 20. 2006. Mahajan died 13 days later.  (pic credit-Getty Images)

2014 – Gary Stanley Becker. American eceonomist, wrote several books on economics,  won Nobel Prize in 1992.

Titbits….  1. Lady Gaga’s free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, draws crowd estimated at 2.5 million attendees, the largest concert in history for a female artist (pic credit-grammy.com).

2. The earliest loaf of bread ever discovered is a whopping 8,600 years old, unearthed at Çatalhöyük, a Neolithic settlement in what is now southern Turkey, comprised of mud-brick dwellings built on top of one another.
