1854 – The first U.S. patent was issued for a sewing machine with a four-motion feed, which enabled sewing curving seams.

1863 -Linoleum was developed by Frederick Walton of England.  The name linoleum is formed from two Latin words for linen and oil (pic credit-Wikipedia).

1910 – Rayon was first commercially produced. At the time, it was known by the name of artificial silk or a similar name. It was not until 1924 that the term rayon was adopted.

1950 – Rose Marie Reid of Los Angeles, California, received a U.S. patent for a one-piece bathing suit “embodying a novel construction for causing it to snugly fit the body of a wearer in a flattering manner,” using elastic fabric.

1952 – Nehru announces the Government’s decision for establishing an Andhra State, constituting Telugu speaking areas of the State of Madras, excluding the city. Hyderanad was made the capital of Andhra Pradesh (map credit-Researchgate, not to scale).

1958 – The first known radio broadcast from outer space was transmitted.

1961 – Goa was liberated after Portuguese surrendered to the Indian troops.

1978 – The Lok Sabha expels Indira Gandhi from the House and sentences her to imprisonment for a term lasting its prorogation. She was released from jail on December 26.

1995 – Unidentified aircraft drops a heap of sophisticated arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles, rocket launchers and anti-tank grenades in Purulia district in West Bengal. Danish citizen Kim Davy was the prime accused,  planned  a  help for  Naxalite rebels in West Bengal (pic credit-AP).

2000 – The Government suffers an embarrassing defeat with the Rajya Sabha adopting a motion recording its “disagreement” with the Prime Minister AB Vajpayee for defending three of his Cabinet colleagues  LK Advani, MM Joshi and Uma Bharti,  charged in the Babri Masjid demolition case” (pic credit-DailyMotion).

2019 – Earliest fossilized trees, 386 million years old, found at a quarry in Cairo, New York, study published in “Current Biology”.

Born…. 1934 – Ms Pratibha Devisingh Patil,  12th President of India from 2007 to 2012. An educationist, lawyer and politician. She was the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007. She was also an MLA in Maharashtra legislature and a minister. Ms Patil represented one  Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha term each between 1985-1996, as being Gandhi family loyalist, she was prefered to Presidential nomination, over Dr. Karan Singh and Shivraj Patil. She ran  institutes named Vidya Bharati Shikshan Prasarak Mandal from Amravati, Pune, Jalgaon, Mumbai and a Women’s Hostel in Delhi. She had a shatre  controversies over financial, properties  and foreign travels during her term.

1969 – Nayan Ramlal Mongia,  former Indian right hand batsman,  swift wicketkeeper, commentator and coach. He played 44 Tests and 140 O DIs.

1975 – Mahi Gill,  Chandigarh born model and Bollywood actor.  Mahi  has acted in Dev.D, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster, Paan Singh Tomar, Posham Paa, Carry On Jatta, Shareek etc.  She has won Film Crics award on debut  and IIFA award for her roles (pic credit-Getty Images).

1915 – Alois Alzheimer, German psychiatrist who recognised the disease named after him.

1994 – K. A. P. Vishwanathan, famous Tamil author, social activist and Sidha medicine practitioner. He didn’t study in a school or college but became a man of literature. He joined Justice Party alongwith  Periyar EV Ramaswamy, CN Annadurai  and opposed Hindi in Madras Presidency but later resigned due to differences (pic credit-Hindu Tamil).
