1878 – Lord Lytton (Robert Bulwar-Lytton), the Viceroy of India, st
arted the Second Anglo-Afghan War to reduce Russia’s growing influence in the region.
1947 – First postal stamp of Indepedent India of three and half annas denomination was started. Although Indian postyal stamps is believed to have started between 1852-54 during Marathas rule.
1947 – Major General KM Cariappa took over from Lieutenant General Sir Francies Tulker as the Army Commander, Eastern Command, in the rank of Lieutenant General. He was later appointed as Chief of India Army on Jan. 15, 1949 to Jan. 14, 1953, with a Five Star Rank of Field Marshal. He also headed the three forces as Chairman of the Staff Committee. He also served as Indian High Commissioner in Australia and New Zealand during (1953-56).
1969 – Bhilai Steel Plant creates a new world record in steel-making by producing ‘one heat’ in four hours three minutes.
1971 – Battle of Garibpur: Indian troops aided by Mukti Bahini (Bengali guerrillas) defeat the Pakistan army (pic credit-organiser.org).
1973 – Seth Govinddas, M.P. of Jabalpur, was honoured in the Central Hall of Parliament for completion of 25 years in Parliament, which was an unprecedented record. He was a freedom fighter, popular writer, poet and politician. Was a
warded Padam Bhushan.
1993 – India and South Africa sign a historic pact on re-establishing diplomatic and consular relations after a gap of 50 years.
2016 – India celebrates 50th anniversary of IR8, a high-yielding rice variety that helped avert famine a
cross Asia.
2024 – Launch of a bribery accusations against Gautam Adani promoter of Adani Entreprises by the US Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn, based on alleged charges by short-selling firm Hindenburg Research, though it gave no documentary proofs and was denied by Gautam Adani. Adani has been ranked as the Richest Person in India and World No. 29 as of Sept. 2025.
2024 – Evidence is presented of the earliest known alphabet on clay cylinders, 4,400 years old, 500 years older than
previous writing, discovered in tombs in Umm el-Marra, Syria.
Born…. 1926 – Premnath, veteran Bollywood actor, mostly in character and villain roles. Known for films Ajit, Aan, Teesri Manzil, Magroor, Krodhi, Johney Mera Naam, Tere Mere Sapne, Bobby, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Dharmatma etc. He was also brother-in-law of iconic hero, producer Raj Kapoor. Premnath won 3 Filmfare awards.

RIP…. 1970 – Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Indian physicist whose work was influential in the growth of science in India. Born in Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu) his research on wavelength and scattering of rays of light led to Raman Effect. He was the First Asian and non-white to receive Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930. He launched Indian Journal of Physics in 1926, became First Indian Director of Indian Institue of Science, Bengaluru in 1933 and founded Indian Academy of Sciences and Raman Research Institute in 1948.
