1336 – The famous Vijaynagar Empire established covering Deccan region of India. The Eur
opean visitors were overwhelmed by the wealth and advancement of its 17-square-mile capital.It was a Kakatiya dynasty established by 2 brothers, Harihara-I and Bukha Raya-I (believed to be Sangama dynasty of Yadava clan, a Chandravansha lineage). It spread over modern day states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, parts of Telangana and Maharashtra,
1846 – The first U.S. patent for a telegraph ticker that would print letters of the alphabet was issued to Samuel Morse of R.E. House, New York City. It was able to print at the rate of 50 words a minute in Roman letters. (It
had first been publically exhibited in 1844 at the American Institute Fair in New York City. It was widely used for ten years, until replaced by improved versions).
1910 – The first night airplane flight made in the U.S. was made by Walter R. Brookins in Montgomery, Alabama.

1917 – Mahatma Gandhi selected Champaran against Section 144, in Bihar for his first Satyagraha in India. He had earlier applied Satyagrah in South Africa.
1930 – Attempted raid on the armoury of police and auxiliary forces in Chittagong in Bengal province, British India by armed pro-independence revolutionaries led by Surya Sen popularly known as Master-da.
1948 – The International Court of Justice was established in The Hague, Netherlands.
2001 – 16 Indian soldiers were martyred due to the firing of the Bangladesh army which entered the Indian border.
2015 – An outbreak of an unknown disease in Nigeria has so far resulted in 17 deaths, each occurring within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms; while tests show that the disease is not viral, the cause has not yet been identified.

Born…. 1858 – Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve, considered the greatest social reformer and savior. He ended his entire life doing social service in various obstacles and struggles, proving his statement (‘Where there is a will, there is a way’) to be absolutely true.
1916 – Lali
ta Pawar, a famous actress. An artist giving best performances of a senior Indian family Mother-in-Law (Saas) played in many memorable films. She won Filmfare award for film Anari, Also acted in Daag, Sujata, Phool Aur Pather, Shree 420, Mr. & Mrs 55, Raja Harishchandra., Gopi, Banarasi Thug, Ankhen, She played Manthara in Ramananda Sagar’s epic serial Ramayan. She was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademy in 1961. (we have covered her in our April 16 issue as well, by mistake).
1956 – Poonam Dhillon, popular Bollywood heroine. Launched in film Noorie, s
he has many blockbuster films to her credit viz., Sohni Mahiwal, Trishul, Yeh Vada Raha, Teri Meharwania, Teri Kasam, Naam etc. She won 2 Filmfare awards and Eve’s Weekly Young Indian award in 1978.
RIP…. 1859 – Tatya Tope, a Great General and leading heroes of India’s
‘First War of Independence of 1857. Through his military campaigns at many places, this hero fought hard with the British forces in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, etc., and troubled them badly. He had adopted the gorilla warfare system. He was hanged by the British.
1898 – Damodar Hari Chapekar. He was immortalised among the revolutionary martyrs of India. Damodar Hari Chapekar and his two brothers Balkrishna Chapekar and Vasudev Chapekar have also left their indelible mark on Indian history. These three brothers were influenced by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and were famous by the name ‘Chapekar Bandhu’.

1955 – Albert Einstein, German-American physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. Recognised in his own time as one of the most creative intellects in human history.
1978 – Sir Shobha Singh, MLC, MP, the famous builder of New Delhi’s most historical buildings viz., Connaught Place, Raisina Hill multi-storey buildings, AIFACS, Baroda House, Chemsford
Club, Broadcasting House (AIR), Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Branch etc. He was also contractor for Bhakra Nangal Dam in Punjab. He was also behind formation of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee and father of eminent writer Khushwant Singh.
