1664 – Chhatrapati Shivaji attacked on Surat on Jan. 5 and  got control on 6th.

1714- An idea for a possible typewriter predecessor was patented by Englishman Henry Mill, but he never succeeded in perfecting his invention and it died with him.

1818 – Maratha  State of Holkar’s  in Central India (Indore)  annexed with Rajput states and placed  under the British protection. Holkar’s ruled  the state between 1732-1818 and did great services at the  Hindu  religious places.

1838 – Samuel Morse, with his partner, Alfred Vail, gave the first public demonstration of their new invention electric telegraphic system.

1842 – The British East India Company’s forces began their retreat from Kabul during the First Anglo-Afghan War. In the numerous attacks by the tribals, British army lost 4,500 troops, along with about 12,000 civilians: the latter comprising both the families of Indian and British soldiers, plus workmen, servants and other Indian camp-followers.

1851 – The rotation of the Earth was discovered by Leon Foucault, the French physicist who is also known for his works of Earth’s gravity and pendulum.

1929 – Mother Teresa arrives in Calcutta to begin her work amongst India’s poorest and diseased people.

1989 – Indira Gandhi’s assassins, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh, were sentenced  to death and executed for their roles in the 1984 assassination, with Satwant Singh being one of the guards who fired the fatal shots, and Kehar Singh convicted for conspiracy, while the third shooter, Beant Singh, was killed at the scene (pic credit-reddit.com).                                                                                                                                                                          2023 – New Study discovers ancient Roman concrete is stronger than modern concrete because of the use of a hot mixing technique, with quicklime that self-healed any cracks over time.

Born…1913 – Loretta Young, American actress, started as child artist in 1917 and acted until 1953, she won an Academy Award, 2 Golden Globe and 3 Primetime Emmy awards apart from several other accolades.

1918 – Bharat Vyas, famous lyricist of Hindi films, Churu (Rajasthan) born Bharat  wrote his  first song : Aao Veero Hilmil Gaye Vande Mataram at age 17. He wrote thousands of popular songs for over 200 films; songs   like and Ae Maalik Tere Bande Ham, Ye Kaun Chitrakar Ham etc. were written by him. He got many awards and accolades.  His brother Brij Mohan Vyas was also a popular actor.

1932 – Kamleshwar, famous Hindi  film screenwriter of 20th century.  Known for films Aandhi, Mausam, Chhoti Si Baat, Rang Birangi etc. and TV serials like Jamuna Bazar,  Darpan, Ek Kahani, Parikrama He also worked for Door Darshan He wrote novels like Kitne Pakistan,  Azadi Mubarak, Mere Hamsafar etc. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan (2005).

1939 – The comic strip ‘Superman’, publishing started  in newspapers. It was  created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938.

1949 – Naib Subedar Bana Singh, Param Vir Chakra awardee for his cleverness, valour, and courage. He led a task force of soldiers to recapture Siachen Glacier at an altitude of 21,000 ft.

1959 – Kapildev Ramlal Nikhanj, cricketer.  India’s finest all-rounder (1978-94), He captained and excelled in  the ICC ODI  World  1983,   with his  mesmerizing batting and bowling. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1983, Padma Bhushan in 1991 and adjudged Wisdon  Cricketer of the Century.  He also won ICC’s  Hall of Fame in 2010 and CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award in 2013 . He now plays professional  Golf.

1966 – AR Rahman, popular music composer,  song-writer, singer and producer. Born as  Arunachalam Dilip Kumar Mudaliar in Chennai has worked in Tamil and Hindi films. He came into prominence with Slumdog Millionaire’s song  Jai Ho  in 2008.   He has won 6 National Film Music, two Oscars, 2 Grammy, a BAFTA  and  several Filmfare awards from over 145 films in 30 years long career (pic credit-Filmbaat).   

1984 – Diljit Dosanjh. Popular Punjabi and Hindi  singer, actor and producer. He has acted in Udta Punjab, Jatt & Juliet- series 1-3, Crew, Good Newzz, Amar Singh Chamkila etc.  Has won PTC Punjabi awards 5 times and nominated for several other accolades.

RIP…. 1885 – Bharatendu Harishchandra. Legendary Indian poet, dramatist, novelist and philosopher called ‘Father of Modern Hindi’.  His works Vaidik Himsa Na Bhavati, Bharat Durdasha, Satya Harishchandra etc. were acclaimed writings.

1987 – Jaidev, legendary  music director, who started in 1961 with Hum Dono,  Mujhe Jeene Do, Reshma aur Shera, Do Boond Paani,  Prem Parbat, Gaman, Gharaounda, Kinare Kinare, Tumhare Liye, Alaap, Aankhen etc. He won National Film award 3 times and Filmfare 6 times.                                                                                                                               2017 – Om Puri. Was an Indian actor,  who appeared in mainstream commercial Hindi films as well as Urdu, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, English, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu, and Marathi films, as well as independent and art films and also starred in several international cinema. Started his career with  Ghasiram Kotwal (by  famous satirist Vijay Tendulkar), Aakrosh, Aarohan, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, etc. and worked in Tamas, Ardh Satya, Disco Dancer, Sadgati, Chachi 420, Hera Pheri, Dhol  etc.  He was awarded 2 National Films, 2 Filmfare awards and an Order of English Empire,

You may have known….1. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in   the world after China, but China’s fruit  production is three times India’s production. India’s fruits production was over 110.21 million tons in 2022-23.
