1630 – The popcorn was introduced to the English colonists by an Indian named Quadequina who brought it in deerskin bags as his contribution at their first Thanksgiving dinner.
1854 – Cowasji Nanabhai Davar founded “The Bombay Spinning and Weaving Mill” in Tardeo, Mumbai, which effectively launched India’s industrial revolution. The factory started production on July 07, 1954 and is now known as Bombay Dyeing & Spinning Mills.

1907 – 1st cabs with taxi meters begin operating in London.

1918 –As per the  Guinness Book of  World Records, Sultan Kösen is the tallest living human standing at 8 feet 2.82 inches (251 centimeters) tall; he is a Turkish farmer. The earlier documented world’s  tallest human being,  Robert Pershing Wadlow was born in US.

1946 – The first specific antibiotic (streptomycin) effective against tuberculosis was discovered.

1947 – Nehru welcomes British independence offer, invites Muslims to join at New Delhi.

1983 -Over  3,000  citizens  die in communal clashes in Assam mainly on illegal infiltrators from neighbouring Bangladesh.

1995 – Steve Fossett completed the first hot air balloon flight over Pacific Ocean:9600 km. (On 3 Mar 2005, he completed the first solo non-stop and fastest flight around the world without refuelling, in The Global Flyer, a single-engine, single-use experimental jet plane).

1995 – Bomb attack on train in Assam (27 soldiers killed).

1996 – The Hawala scandal caused a major political stir in India, implicating several members of the Narasimha Rao government. Police charged 14 politicians in a major corruption scandal involving the Jain brothers’ diaries.

2000 – In Haryana, photo identity cards were made mandatory for the first time during assembly elections.

2003 – Pakistani pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar bowls the fastest ball recorded in cricket history at 100.2 mph (161.3 km/h). (Shoaib recently called PCB chief as a Jaahil, incompetent for Asia Cup Cricket controversy  refusing to deliver  India’s trophy.) 

2018 – Neanderthals, not humans, were the first artists on Earth, producing red cave  paintings 65,000 years ago in Spain, according to new research published in “Science”. (pic credit-adntro.com).                                                                                                                 2023 – Astronomers reveal Webb telescope data is upending existing theories of how early galaxies were formed, after finding six massive galaxies 100x  larger than expected soon after the Big Bang.

2024 – Odysseus is the first private spacecraft to land on the Moon, albeit on its side.

Born….   1873 – Sir Muhammad Ekbal, writer of song ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha,  Hindustan Hamara’. on Aug. 16, 1904. He shifted to Pakistan in 1947 but later repented on  his error of judgment.

1889 – Sehjanand Saraswati. Indian ascetic, freedom fighter, Kisan leader of Up and Bihar.

1906 – Sohan Lal Dwivedi. famous Indian poet who wrote many patriotic and inspiring songs, bhajans  etc. Known for his patriotic poems such as Gandhi Tumhe Naman,  Ali Racho Chand, Khadi Geet, Giriraj, Nayanon ki Resham Dori se, Mathrubhumi, Prakriti Sandesh, Jay Rashtra Nishan, Re Man, Vandana and Himala. He Was honoured as Rashtrakavi and Padma Shri awards.

1920 – Iftikhar Ahmed Shariff (Sayadhana). Famous Jalandhar born  Bollywood  Supercop who went to Calcutta  as a painter for  Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein  but became  a successful actor. He is known for  roles in  films Taqrar, Bandini, Sangam, Sawan Bhadon, Call Girl, Shaheed, Janzeer,  Deewar,  Agent Vinod, Joru ka Ghulam, Johanny Mera Naam, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Teesri Manzil, Teesri Kasam etc. Acted in about 400 films including an American TV serial and English film City of Joy.  He won many awards and accolades.

1948 – Jayalalitha, former actress and chief minister of Tamil Nadu. She co-founded the AIADMK alongwith  legendary actor  and CM of Tamil Nadu MG Ramachandran.  She was CM for about 14 years and is one of the richest politicians of the country. 27 Kg of Gold and ornaments, 1,116 kg silver were found from her possession and 1,526 acres of land in her name on Bengaluru court orders. More properties are reported to be in possession of her longtime secretary Sasikala.

1964 – Suraj Barjatya, acclaimed film director and producer, known for family-oriented blockbusters like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun,  Vivah, Uunchai, Ham Saath Saath Hain, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Mein Prem Ki Deewani Hoon etc. and a TV serial Bada Naam Karenge. He won 2 Filmfare Awards. His grandfather Tarachand Barjatya was also a successful film director/producer of  films like Dosti, Tapasya, Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se etc. (pic with wife  Vineeta Barjatya-credit-starsunfolded.com)

RIP….  1944 – Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mahatma Gandhi and a vital figure in the Indian independence movement. She passed away while in British custody at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune.                                                                                                                                                                                                    1958 – Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was a famous  Gandhian  leader,  orator, revolutionary and fighter for national freedom. He became  India’s first Education Minister and remained until  his death in  Feb. 1958..                                                                                                                                                               You may have known….  India’s average population density is 435 persons per sq km. World average, taking total land and water area into consideration, is – 13.7 persons per sq km.
