1920 – the League of Nations held its first assembly  in Paris,  after First World War.

1956 – Elvis Presley, legendary  Amercan singer, actor   makes his debut in film ‘Love Me Tender’.

1971 – Intel released its first microprocessor.

1977 – Shah of Iran is welcome by US President  Jimmy Carter.

1989 – Test debut of Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Yunus at Karachi. He is known as the Man of Hundreds, having scored about 100 centuries in his  24 years cricketing career.

1991 – Import curbs on capital goods relaxed in India.

2000 – Jharkhand was formed as a State out of Bihar, with Jhansi as its capital..

2000 – India cancels cricket series with Pakistan in January next on account of Islamabad’s ”hostile propaganda”.map-of-jharkhand

2011 – In Tibet, several acts of self-immolation prompt exiled Tibetans in India to urge the Chinese government to end its repressive policies restricting the Tibetan’s religious freedom.

Born…. 1875 – Birsa Munda, tribal freedom fighter  for  independence of India from the British rule.  He led revolt in Khunti, Tamar, Sarvada and Bandgaon regions  of Bengal presidency during those days. Born in Ulihatu village of Ranchi distt, the family converted  to Christianity  by luring with free food and education, he later started a new faith of   Birsait alongwith his followers and opposed Christian missionaries  in tribal regions.  He soon decalred himself as a Prophet (Dharti Baba) to reclaim the tribal lands from British occupation. He led tribal groups to attack British Police and Churches in 1899-1900, was arrested and died in prison on  June 09 at an age of just 24. He’s worshipped by tribals as their Bhagwan and his birthday is celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas since Nov. 2021.(pic credit-Wikimedia Commons).

1932 – Air Chief Marshal Surinder Kumar Mehra PVSM, AVM, VM, 14th Chief of Indian Air Force from August 01, 1988 to  July 31, 1991.

1947 – Vidya Sinha. Very cretive model and romantic Bollywood actress.  She also won Miss Bombay award.  Known for roles in Raja Kaka, Basu Chatterji directed films Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat, Pati Patni Aur Voh, Inkaar, Tumhare Liye , Kitaab, Mukti, Swaymvar  and Safar etc. She refused the lead role in Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sundaram for its bold and nude scenes. She married twice as her husband died early. She  was nominated for Filmfare several times but  missed the  reward to competitors. She died on August 15, 2019.

1982 – Daljiet Kaur. India’s popular Punjabi and  Hindi  TV actress. Mostly works in serials  Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Nach Baliye  etc. and won an award.

1986 – Sania Mirza, one of the top  Indian tennis player. Former world No. 1 Tennis player. Won 3 major Singles titles and 3 Doubles.  She played in Doubles with Rohan Bopanna and  Swiss ace player Martyina Hingis and won  Women’s Dubles tiles.                                                                                                                                                               She married  Pak crickewter Shoib Malik but recently divorced.  She will  act as Brand Ambassdor  for UAE coach  Dubai team.  Her net worth is about $ 20 million. (Rs. 200 crores).

RIP…. 1937 – Jayshankar Prasad, famous Hindi  Chhayawadi writer. Born in Benaras (Varanasi) in 1889 as Ramjit Baghel Prasad,  studied Vedas, Puranas, Sanatan books and  literature, wrote for Bhartendu magazine,  wrote several  novels, story collections and poems.  His works include the epic (mahakavya) “Kamayanee”,  play “”Chandra Gupt”, Prem Pathik, Varunalaya, Maharana Ka Mahatva, Chitradhar, Aansu, Lehar etc. He was awarded Manglaprasad Paritoshak and several other literary awards.

1949 –Nathuram Vinayak Godse., a Hindu Mahasabha actisit.   Hanged for shooting Mahatma Gandhi dead on January 30, 1948. Though  it is a mystery Nathuram Godse who motivated him to do this crime, as many Congress leaders were opposed to Gandhi’s  support for  Partition of India  and sanctioning  huge amount (then) Rs. 55 crores   to Pakistan during 1947-48

1982 – Acharya Vinoba Bhave,  Great Gandhian philosopher, who started Bhoodan Andolan, asking big landlords to  give their excess lands to the poor of the country, so thyat they could make thor living comfortly.   Was known as Acharya Vinoba Bhave and lived in  Gandhi Ashram Wardha, Maharasthra. He was honored with  Ramon  Magasaysey award in 1958 and  Bharrt Ratna in 1983.

You may have known…. India’s oil production was approximately 670,000 barrels per day in December 2024.
