1989 – Panchayati Raj and Nagarpalika Bills defeated in Rajya Sabha.

Born…. 1911 – Ashok Kumar, legendary actor. Born as Kumdlal Ganguly, in Bhagalpur (West Bengal), known as Dada Muni, entered films thru’ his wife’s cousin Chhaya Devi a Bengali actress. Though he made his debut later in 1936 wth a film Jeevan Naiya alongside legendary actress Devika Rani. His next films Achhut Kanya, Bandhan, Jhoola, Kismat etc. were successful films. Chal Chal Re Naujawan, Sajan, Mahal, Andaaz, Barsaat, Karz, Madhumati, Sangram, Gumrah, Afsana, Deedar, Parineeta, Chalti ka Naam Gaadi (which also had his 2 younger brothers Anoop and Kishore alongwith Madhubala), Hawrah Bridge, Dhool Ka Phool.. Sharafat, Purab Aur Paschim, Aashirwad, Neel nKamal, Satyakam, Mere Mehboob, Adhikaar, Guddi etc. over 200 films and popular soap opera Ham Log on Doordarshan as anchor/commentator. Ashok Kumar was hpnpured with Dadasaheb Phalke award in apart from Sangeet Natak Akademi, Padma Shri/Bhushan, 2 National awards, 3 Filmfare, Bengal Film Assn. several nominations and accolades.
1948 -Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, popular Pakistani Qawwali singer, lyricist and musician. His family lineage runs 9 generations of musicians; grandfather Maulabaksh, father
Fateh Ali Khan and Mubarak Ali were famous Qawwals of India pre-indepedence.
RIP…. 1240 – Razia Sultan, first lady ruler of Delhi throne; was murdered by Turks. Daughter of sultan Shamsuddin Altumish, she ruled Delhi during 1231-32 and 1236-40.
1911 – Sister Nivedita, Scottish -Irish social worker, author and follower of Swami Vivekanand. Impressed by Swami’s teachings on Vedanta during his London visit in 1895, she travelled to India in 1898 and helped treat plague patients during the epidemic in Bengal. Joined Ramakrishna Ashram and persued Hindu and Buddhist ideals. Established a Hindu Ladies’ Social Club in Bombay in 1902. She introduced Vande Matram recitation to her schools/institutions and supported India’s Freedom struggle alongwith Annie Basant, Gandhi and others.
1987 – Kishore Kumar Ganguly, legendary and most dynamic singer, actor, youngest brother of Ashok Kumar (above), he sang over 2680 songs in many Indian languages includig Hindi, Bengali and English. Starting with Ziddi in 1948 to 1987. Known for Youdelling , musician and happy go lucky comic actor, regarded as one of the greatest, most influential and dynamic singers in the history of modern Indian music. He sang songs/Bhajans/Ghazals in Hindi, Bengali, Odiya, Assamese, Marathi, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Gujarati languages. He also acted in Naukari, Musafir, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Fantoosh, Padosan, and sang for films like Munimji (1954), Taxi Driver, Nau Do Gyarah, Paying Guest, Guide, Jewel Thief, Aaradhana, Safar, Amanush, Prem Pujari, Prem Pujari, Tere Mere Sapne, Teen Devian, Kora Kagaz, Andaaz, Hare Rama Hare Krishna etc. He won 8 Filmfare awards, several BFJA, Lata Mangeshkar Award and Madhya Pradesh Govt. has started Kishore Kumar award to reward the young musicians.
