1948 – An Indian brigade group supported by the 7th Cavalry (Stuart tanks) broke through the Great Himalayan Range at Zojila to drive out the invaders from Ladakh district. At approximately 3,500 metres, this was the highest point in the history of

1954 – India takes over administration of 4 French Indian settlements. The French establishments included Pondichéry, Karikal and Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast, Mahé on the Malabar Coast, and Chandernagor in Bengal. The possessions were originally acquired by the French East India Company beginning in the second half of
the 17th century, and were de facto incorporated into the Union of India in 1950 and 1954 (pic credit-ar.inspiredpencil.com).
1956 – Indian Government re-organizes the states according to linguistic principles. The states declared were Madhya Pradesh; Punjab by merging Patiala & PEPSU; Mumbai was divided in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Union Territories namely Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were approved.
1966 – State of Haryana created from Punjab; Chandigarh territory created. Both states have their capital in Chandigarh, though it was promised to shift Haryana capital elsewhere and hand over Chandigarh to Punjab.
1973 – Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were renamed as Lakshadweep, and Masker (Mysore) state renamed as Karnataka to represent all the regions within Karunadu .

1985 – Helicopter Corporation of India, later renamed Pawan Hans Limited, started functioning.
2000 – Chhattisgarh is formed from the southeastern part of Madhya Pradesh, India.
2012 – Google’s Gmail becomes the world’s most popular email service.

1974 – Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman, one of the most elegent stroke
player of India. Hyderabad born right hand batsaman scored 281 runs in a Test against Australia in 2001 (has 353 as top score in First Class).
