1800 – John Adams becomes the first US president to live in White House.

1858 – Her Majesty Queen Victoria was no longer amused with the Company’s loss of control, and British  Government took over administrative powers from East India Company to rule India.

1901 – Dr. J.E. Gillman announced an X-ray treatment for breast cancer.

1931 – Dupont introduces synthetic rubber.

1948 – An Indian brigade group supported by the 7th Cavalry (Stuart tanks) broke through the Great Himalayan Range at Zojila to drive out the invaders from Ladakh district. At approximately 3,500 metres, this was the highest point in the history of warfare that tanks had operated. 1954 – India takes over administration of 4 French Indian settlements. The French establishments included Pondichéry, Karikal and Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast, Mahé on the Malabar Coast, and Chandernagor in Bengal. The possessions were originally acquired by the French East India Company beginning in the second half of  the 17th century, and were de facto incorporated into the Union of India in 1950 and 1954 (pic credit-ar.inspiredpencil.com).

1956 – Indian Government re-organizes the states according to linguistic principles. The states declared were Madhya Pradesh; Punjab by merging Patiala & PEPSU; Mumbai was divided in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Union Territories namely Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were approved.

1966 – State of Haryana created from Punjab; Chandigarh territory created. Both states have their capital in Chandigarh, though  it was promised to  shift Haryana capital elsewhere and hand over Chandigarh to Punjab.

1973 – Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were renamed as Lakshadweep, and Masker (Mysore) state renamed as Karnataka to represent all the regions within Karunadu .

1985 – Helicopter Corporation of India, later renamed Pawan Hans Limited, started functioning.

2000 – Chhattisgarh is formed from the southeastern part of Madhya Pradesh, India.

2012 – Google’s Gmail becomes the world’s most popular email service.

2023 – “AI” is named the most notable word of the year by Chambers Dictionary.

Born….  1863 – George Safford Parker, an American inventor who perfected the fountain pen and founded the Parker Pen Company to manufacture it.                                                                                                                                    1965 – Padmini Kolhapure, popular Bollywood actor. Known for her successful roles in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Insaf Ka Tarazu, Woh 7 Din, Prem Rog, Sautan etc. She did about 75 films and won 3 Filmfare and several other awards (pic credit-bodopedia.com).

1973 – Aishwarya Rai (Bachchan) is one the most beautiful and celebrated Indian actor, model and Miss World Award winner in 1994. She debuted in film industry thru’ Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar (Tamil) in 1997 and Aur Pyar Ho Gaya (Hindi) followed by Jeans, Ham Dil De Chuke sanam, Devdas, Chokhar Bali, Raincoat, Provoked, Guzarish, Mohabbaten, Dhoom-2, Guru, Jodha Akbar, Ponniyin-I, -II, Taal, Hamara Dil Aapke paas Hai, Kuchh Na Kaho, Sarbjit  etc. in over 50 films winning several accolades including Times  of India’s 50 – Most Desired Women, Times (London) 100 Most Influential Persons, Member of Cannes Award Jury in 2004, Madame Taussad’s Wax Model at Times Square USA. Has won a Padma Shri, Order of Arts & Letters from  Govt. of France,  2 Filmfare, A Bafta and other film  awards. She’s the grand daughter of  veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan- Jaya Bhaduri-Bachchan  (married to Abhishek). Her net worth is believed to be over $ 100 million.

1974 – Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman, one of the most elegent   stroke   player of India. Hyderabad born right hand batsaman  scored 281 runs in a Test against Australia  in 2001 (has 353 as top score in First Class). He played 134 Tests and 86 ODIs, agregating 8,781 in Tests with 17 centuries and 19,730 runs in  First Class matches.                                                       1973 – Tisca Chopra,  Bollywood actor, who acted Tare Zamin Par,  etc. She  won 2 Filmfare, a Big Star and a StarDust award. You may have known….  Long before they became fashionable accessories for sunny days, in Chinese courtrooms, judges used dark-lensed glasses to hide their facial expressions.
