On this day, 10 Dec….                                                                                                                                                                                                          (The day is observed as *World Human Rights Day, to protect the fundamental human rights of all people and their basic human freedom).

1845 – Civil engineer Robert William Thomson patented pneumatic tyres in London. Thomson was the son of the owner of a woollen mill and was sent at age 14 to Charleston, South Carolina. After returing two years later he started  practicing civil engineering, worked on explosives and  pneumatic rubber from India where he made tyres filled with air, later developed rubber tube covered with hard tyres.

1901 – At the first Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, the king of Sweden distributed the first Nobel Prizes, in accordance with the will of inventor Alfred Nobel. The day was his death  Anniversary (pic credit-Nobel Prize Foundation).

1930 – C.V. Raman is awarded Nobel Prize in Physics.  Raman and one of  his student KS Krishan and developed a spectroscope. Working on it, he  discovered the scattering of light  when deflected  and it  changes its  wavelength.  The discovery  is called Raman Effect and won him Nobel Prize in Physics.

1932 – The Indian Military Academy (IMA) was formally inaugurated by Field Marshal Sir Philip W Chetwode, Bt, GOB, KCMG, GCSI, DSO and was christened as “The Pioneer “. The crowning event was delivered in the hall, now named after him, and in the address to the trainees, he enunciated three principles: ‘the safety, honour, and welfare of your country comes first, always and ever time’, which were to guide the future officers of the Indian Army . A passage from this address has come to acquire immortality and has been adopted as the credo of the Academy.

1952 – World’s first official Family Planning programme launched in India.

1990 – Hindu-Muslim riots in Hyderabad-Aligargh, 140 die. Then Congress Chief Minister Chenna Reddy later admitted  that the  riots were  initiated  by Congress  leaders  and  none of  the  rioters were arrested.

1992 – The Central Government bans RSS, VHP, ISS, Bajrang Dal and Jamait-e-Islami.

1998 – Indian economist Amartya Sen is awarded a Nobel prize in Economics. Shantiniketan (Bengal) born  and Presidency College Calcutta educated  Sen went to England in 1953 and studied in Trinity College,  later did studies Social Choice theory and mathematical  logic, poverty, famines, equality of what theorem  etc. which won him Nobel Prize  in 1998 and Bharat Ratna in 1999. He also awarded several other prizes from French, Americal and Bangladesh govts.  later. His tenure as Chancellor of Nalanda University and views on Article 370 revocation have been  criticised  in the  public widely.

2022 – Tens of thousands of people protest in Dhaka, Bangladesh, against the government demanding resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and new elections amid cost of living crisis. Though her party  Awami League won the elections in 2009 to 2024, she was deposed  through international pressures on August 05, with  2024, Mohd. Yunus taking over as Chief Advisor.  She has been in exile in India since then.

Born…. 1830 – Emily E Dickinson. Prominent American poet,  Most popular for her brilliance and integrity in life.

1878 – Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, great social reformer, ardent patriot, incisive thinker and eminent literateur. He was the first Indian Governor General of independent India and popularly known as ‘Rajaji’.   Though later he fell out with PM Nehru, resigned the post of Guv. General  and founded Swatantra Party alongwith several prominent leaders opposing Congress and  Nehru’s policies. and joined  state politics, remained Chief Minister of Madras state upto 1954. He wrote Mahabharta, Ramayana, Upnishad  Bhagwat Gita and more books on Indian culture in Tamil and English. He was honoured with Sahitya Akademy award and Bharat Ratna in 1954.

1960 – Rati Agnihotri, veteran romantic heroine who  debuted in film industry with blockbuster  Ek Duje Ke Liye and won 2 nominations to Filmfare in 1982. Also acted in Shoukeen, Swami Dada, Coolie, Pasand Apni, Apni, Tawaif,  Rishta Kaagaz Ka, Mashaal, etc. in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu over 40 films. She was honored with several other outstanding  achievement awards.

1965 – Jayaram Subramaniam, Malayalam actor, who did  about films in Malyalee and Tamil. He’s a popular chenda percussionist, mimicry artist, and occasional playback singer too. His major films out of 200 are Summer in Bethelm, Ulakam Chuttum Valakam, Thuppakki etc.  He has won a Kerala State Tamil Nadu State and 4 Filmfare South awards. (pic credit-Instgram)

1978 – Anjana Sukhani. South film actor, model who has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and some Hindi movies like Bejawada, Allah Ke Bande, Department, Shandaar, Coffee with D, Good Newws, Mumbai Saga etc. Has won 2 Filmfare, 6 nominations and some regional awards.

1982 – Shilpa Anand (Ohanna Shivanand), a model and film/television actor. Known for popular TV role  viz.,  as Dr. Ridhima Gupta in Dr. Shilpa  Malhotra, she has also acted in Dil Mil Gayye, Main Rony Aur Jony, Iqrar by Chance, Vishnu,  Bloddy Isshaq, Yeh Hai  Lollipop  etc. She  has won several  nominations  for her  acting  excellence (pic credit-filmibeat.com).

RIP….  1896 – Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the Swedish chemist and inventor who invented dynamite and other  more powerful explosives. Nobel amassed a huge fortune, much of which he left in a fund in endowment for  annual prizes for excfellence, discoveries and  social causes,  that bear his name, as Nobel Prize.

2001 – Ashok Kumar (born as Kumudlal Ganguly)  legendary  Indian actor who attained iconic status in Indian cinema. Popularly called Dada Muni,  he is regarded as one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema. He  debuted with  popular heroine  Devika Rani in Jeevan Naiyya in 1936 and went to do Achhut Kanya by Bimal Roy, then Bandghan , Jhoola etc. But became popular with Kismat in 1943, then Mahal. Andaaz, Bandini, Madhumati, Parineeta,  Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (with his brothers Anup Kumar and  Kishore Kumar), Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Jewel Thief and many more. He appeared in over 125 films most of which were blockbusters, He also appeared in TV serials like Hum Log  on Doordarshan. He was awarded Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1988 and several National Film,  Filmfare and other awards.
