1794 – Joseph Priestley, chemist and natural philosopher, (he had discovered oxygen on 1 Aug 1774) arrived at New York having emigrated from England. He also created soda water.
1887 – The Pasteur Institute was founded in Paris, France.

1907 – Automatic washer & dryer introduced.
1926 – Dalai Lama introduces a tax on ears for Tibetans to equip the army. Those with only one ear will pay half the tax.

1989 – Melville de Mellow, eminent broadcaster. (I can still clearly recall the 27 May 1964 AIR 1:00 pm news bulletin, that I heard in our Kupwara Battalion mess in J&K. Breaking the news of Nehru’s death in an emotional voice Melville’s first four words were, “The light is out”).
