1807 – The world’s first railway passenger service began in Wales, England. Though the original line was closed on 5 Jan 1960, and dismantled.
1843 – The Thames Tunnel in London, the world’s first tunnel under a navigable river, was opened
for pedestrians.
1896 – Modern Olympic Games begin in Athens, the capital of Greece with the efforts of a French aristocrat Pierre de Coubertin. Though the Games started on March 25 (Julian Calender; Gregorian-6th April) had only 14 participating countries in 10 sports disciplines vying for 122 medals in all.
1898 – Swami Vivekanand accepted Sister Nivedita as his disciple impressed by his Sanatan Hindu ethoes. Ireland born Nivedita (Margaret Elizabeth Noble) also took to Brahamcharya on March 25, 1898.
1911 – L D Swamikannu publishes “Manual of Indian Chronology” in Bombay. This gives a chronology of Bombay events in Bombay from 1661 to 1995.
1925 – Production of colour television sets began by John Logie Baird for Westinghouse. In India colour TV programs were launched on April 15, 1982 with transmission of Asian Games events.

2008 – An influential group of Muslim theologians in India have denounced terrorism, saying it is against the teachings of Islam. Their thoughts were given at a meeting being held at an Islamic school. Scholars from around six thousand religious schools were attending the meeting.

1879 – Bapulal Nayak. Gujarati folk theatre personality who acted, directed and produced many shows like Harishchandra, Shakuntal (with Jayshankar Bhojak Sundari), Rajbeej, Kundabala etc. He joined Mumbai Gujarati Natak Mandali to persue his theatre career.
1925 – Kishori Sinha. Indian freedom fighter, women’s empowerment activist, politician. was elected to Lok Sabha from Vaishali (Bihar) twice. She was married to formeer CM Satyendra Narayan Sinha, also a seven time MP.
946 – Chaudhary Birender Singh (Sheokand), a senior political leader. Maternal gradson of legendary Punjab (Haryana) leaer Sir Chhotu Ram, he joined politics in 1977 and won on Congress ticket from Uchana.
He was 5 times MLA and twice Rajya Sabha MP. He served as Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Sanitation & Drinking Water as well as the Union Minister of Steel, in the NDA government from 2016 to 2019. (pic credit-newsdrum.in).
1948 – Farooq Sheikh, actor, philanthropist, and television presenter. He worked with directors like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Ketan Mehta.
