1795 – “Marseillaise” becomes French national anthem.

1815 – Napoleon surrenders to Captain Frederick Maitland of HMS Bellerophon at Rochefort after his earlier defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.

1904 – 1st Buddhist temple in  Los Angeles, United States is opened. It’s called Hompa Hogwanji temple built in over 15 acres.  (pic credit-pinterest.com).

1929 – 1st airport hotel opens (Oakland California).

1932 – US President Hoover cuts own salary 15%.

1948 – Alcoholic Anonymous, an NGO  is  founded in Britain.

1954, – The first commercial jet transport airplane built in US – the Boeing 707, the model 367-80, made its maiden flight.

1979 – Morarji Desai resigns as premier of India. Jagjivan Ram elected Janata Parliamentary party leader.

1986 – India protests against China’s intrusion of six to seven km into the Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh.

1991 – The 25-day-old Narasimha Rao government wins a vote of confidence in Lok Sabha by securing 241 to 111; 112 Members abstained.

2000 – The Maharashtra Government gives the green signal to police to proceed against Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray for his alleged role in the 1992-93 Mumbai communal riots.

Born…. 1783 – Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, great Indian Merchant, Industrialist and philanthropist. He belonged to a textile merchant family of Surat (Gujarat).

1903 – -Kumaraswami Kamaraj, powerful South Indian politician,  freedom fighter  and  powerful  statesman who was Congress President in 1964-67.  He was responsible for selecting Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi as Prime Ministers of India after Nehru’s death.  Kamraj was earlier a Member of the Constituent Assembly, Chief Minister of Madras (TN) between 1954 – 1963.  He thwarted Old Congress leaders (Syndicate lobby) led by Morarjee Desai  from getting PM’s post in 1967.   He was hpnoured with Bharat Ratna in 2004.

RIP…. 1997 – Gianni Versace,  Italian fashion designer, shot to death by Andrew Cunanan at 50. He was a famous businessman, socialite.   He  founded the famous brand  Versace, an international luxury-fashion house that produces accessories, fragrances, make-up, home furnishings and clothes.

You may have known….

Varanasi, also known as Benaras, was called “the Ancient City” when Lord Buddha visited it in 500 B.C., and is the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world today. It’s also believed to have been the  abode of Lord Shiva, who selected it for  meditation. Also known as Mukti Dhaam, because  it is believed, whoever  gets cremation here  gets eternal salvation. There are about 80  Ghats  (like Dashmesh Ghat, Assi Ghat,  Holkar Ghat etc. )  for cremation of  devotee Hindus after death.
