1854 – Postal stamp introduced in India, of denominations of half anna and one anna.
1886 – Baluchisthan became a part of India.
1932 – Indian Military Academy became functional with training for two and a half years.
1934 – Adolf Hitler expands German army & navy & creates an air force, violating Treaty of Versailles.
1956 – The state of Karnataka was formed, merging all the Kannada-speaking regions of South India.
Born…. 1847 – Annie Besant, famous educationist, philosopher, Freemason and thesophist. She was Women’s Rights activist and supporter of India’s and Ireland’s Self-rule. She was member of Theosophical Society and founded several pro-Hindu, Sindhi organisations and critticised the Christian thoughts on Women. She co-founded Benaras Hindu University, Central Hindu School, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Central Hindu Girls School, Sri Pratap College and was elected as President of Congress in 1917. She was a prolific orator, and wrote several books on Social subjects.
1906 – SD Burman, popular Indian singer and musician. Coming from Tripura’s Royal family, he composed many evergreen songs for Abhiman, Taxi Driver, Angare, Shikari, Naya Zamana, Manzil, Kala Bazar, Guide, Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind, Aaradhana etc. He won 2 National Awards, 2 Filmfare, Sangeert Natak Akademy and several other accolades. Was awarded Padma Shri in 1969. His son RD Buram (Pancham) was also a very popular Bollywood singer (sketch credit-Saregama.com).
1919 – Noted Hindi film lyricist and poet Majrooh Sultanpuri. His poems for films Dosti won his Dadasaheb Phakle award apart from Filmfare award and nominations for Talash, Pardesi, Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani etc.
1945 – Ramnath Kovind, 14th President of India from 2017 – 2022. Coming from a small village 8 km from Kanpur (U.P.) he attended school walking up to the City of Kanpur, to complete his High School, Law Degree and passed IAS exam. Yet he practiced as Delhi High Court and Supreme Court lawyer, he joined Bhartiya Janta Party in 1991 and represented Rajya Sabha (April 1994- March 2006) and was appointed Governor of Bihar in 2015. In 2017 he defeated Congress candidate Meira Kumar in Presidential contest. He has been honoured woth several international awards. Post retirement as President he heads the ‘One Nation, One Election’ panel which submitted 18,000 page report in March 20324.
RIP…. 1995 – Aditya Vikram Birla, famous industrialist. Son of Basant Kumat Birla, he inherited the family business in core industries like Aluminium, Cement, Textiles etc. He expanded his business to Egypt, Philipines and other South Eastern countries. He died of prostate cancer in early age of 51.
