1819 – The first bicycle in the U.S. was seen in New York City. Shortly thereafter, on 19 Aug 1819, the city’s
Common Council passed a law to “prevent the use of velocipedes in the public places and on the sidewalks of the city of New York.”
1884 – To improve the vegetarian diet of his hospital patients, Kellogg accidentally left a pot of boiled wheat to stand and become tempered. That was the beginning of the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Co.
1907 – Taxis 1st began running in New York City.
1917 – 1st jazz record released (Dark Town Strutters Ball).

1941 – Electric eye detectors were first used to measure high-jumping height attained.
1970 –PM Indira Gandhi called for international help as the civil war in Bangladesh, (then East Pakistan), had turned two million people into refugees into India. Many of them were sufferi

ng from cholera and smallpox. The authorities of West Pakistan refused to care for them, and India couldn’t afford to.
1987 – Daman and Diu to remain as union territories after Goa becomes the 25th state of India.
1994 – The Union Government imposes blanket ban on capitation fee for admission to private professional colleges.

Born…. 1960 – Mohanlal (Viswanathan Nair), an Indian film actor, film pr
oducer, playback singer, television host, and film distributor. He appears mainly in Malayalam films, although he has also appeared sporadically in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films.
1971 – Aditya Chopra, popular film maker and son of legendary director/producer Yash Chopra, works in Hindi film. His films include Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995),
Mohabbatein (2000), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), and Befikre (2016). Also Son of A Sardar, Raees, Paani, Pathaan, Veer Zara, Ham Tum, Dhoom, Bunty Aur Babli etc. He won National Awards for Direction in 1994, 2005, 2007, 2015. and some Filmfare awards
1976 – Aditi Gowitrikar, model, actress, and physician. She is the first Indian crowned Mrs. World in 2001 in Las Vegas USA and won other beauty contests. She acted in TV serials Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 1, Yeh Meri Life Hai, Mother’s Care, did modelling and acted in Telugu/Hindi films Thammudu, Paheli, De Dana Dan, Ringa Ringas, Who Is The First Wife of My Father etc. She won Gladtrags Mega Model Contest etc.
RIP…. 1960 – Gama Pehalwan (Ghulam Muhammad of Butt clan), Amritsar born freestyle wrestler became a legend in India. Just as the example of Dara Singh is given for physical strength, similarly till some time ago the name of ‘Gama Pehalwan’ was t
aken. On 15 October 1910, Gama was declared the winner of the ‘World Heavyweight Championship’ (South Asia). He was also popular as ‘Rustam-e Hind’ or ‘Rustam-e Zamana’.

1 – Rajiv Gandhi, son of India’s first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and grandson of India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, and the ninth PM of India. His full name was Rajiv Ratna Gandhi. He was the leading General Secretary of the Congress party of India (since 1981) and became the Prime Minister of India (1984–1989) after the assassination of his mother. At the age of 40, Rajiv Gandhi, who achieved the distinction of being the youngest PM of the country, can be called “the architect of modern India” as he promoted Co
mputerisation in India. He was assassinated at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, 40 km from Chennai, at 10.20 P.M.
