On this day, 21 May….

1819 – The first bicycle in the U.S. was seen in New York City. Shortly thereafter, on 19 Aug 1819, the city’s Common Council passed a law to “prevent the use of velocipedes in the public places and on the sidewalks of the city of New York.”

1994 – The Union Government imposes blanket ban on capitation fee for admission to private professional colleges.

1998 – India declares a moratorium on nuclear testing.

2010 – An Air India flight IX-182 coming from Dubai to Mangalore crashed, killing 158 out of 166 passengers (pic credit-financialexpress.com).

2024 – French Post Office La Poste issues a scratch-and-sniff stamp that smells of bread, to celebrate the baguette.

Born…. 1960 – Mohanlal Viswanathan, an Indian film actor, film producer, playback singer, television host, and film distributor. He is known as Mohanlal and appears mainly in Malayalam films, although he has also appeared sporadically in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films.

1971 – Aditya Chopra, popular  film maker and son of legendary  director/producer Yash Chopra,  works in Hindi film. His films include Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Mohabbatein (2000), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), and Befikre (2016).

1976 – Aditi Gowitrikar, model, actress, and physician, Mrs. World 2001.

RIP…. 1960 – Gama Pehalwan (Ghulam Muhammad of Butt clan),  Amritsar born  freestyle wrestler became a legend in India. Just as the example of Dara Singh is given for physical strength, similarly till some time ago the name of ‘Gama Pehalwan’ was taken. On 15 October 1910, Gama was declared the winner of the ‘World Heavyweight Championship’ (South Asia). He was also popular as ‘Rustam-e Hind’ or ‘Rustam-e Zamana’.

1991 – Rajiv Gandhi, son of India’s first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and grandson of India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, and the ninth PM of India. His full name was Rajiv Ratna Gandhi. He was the leading General Secretary of the Congress party of India (since 1981) and  became the Prime Minister of India (1984–1989) after the assassination of his mother. At the age of 40, Rajiv Gandhi, who achieved the distinction of being the youngest PM of the country, can be called “the architect of modern India” as he promoted Computerisation  in India. He was assassinated at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, 40 km from Chennai, at 10.20 P.M.
