1824 -Washing machine patented by Noah Cushing of Quebec.

1869 – Ives W. McGaffney of Chicago obtained the first American patent for a “sweeping machine”. This first suction-type vacuum cleaner was a light hand-powered device for surface cleaning.

1896 – First car thief; Baron de Zuylen’s Peugeot is stolen by his mechanic in Paris.

1936 – 1st parking meters are invented.

1936 – Akashwani Radio; was changed into All India Radio.

1937 – A specimen of the world’s largest flower, first bloomed in the U.S. in the NY Botanical Garden. The giant Sumatran Titan Arum, measured 8½-ft high and 4-ft diam.

1948 – ‘Malabar Princess’, Air India’s first international flight, takes off from Bombay to London via Cairo and Geneva. This was weekly air service started between India and United Kingdom.

1959 – The first official U.S. missile mail was launched from the submarine USS Barbero at about 100 miles off the Atlantic Coast to the Mayport Auxiliary Naval Station. The 36-foot Regulus 1 winged missile carried 3,000 letters, delivering about 22 minutes after launch.

1983 – The first triplets resulting from in-vitro fertilization were born at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia. (Britain’s first test-tube triplets – a girl and two boys – were born on 21 Jan 1984, while in the same year, the world’s first test tube quadruplets were born in Melbourne, Australia-image credit-ABC News)

1999 – ATP announced Paes-Bhupathi as No. 1 ranked doubles team. In individual doubles ranking, Bhupathi and Paes were No. 1 and 2 respectively.
2017 – Ex-FBI chief James Comey testifies to a US Senate committee that US President Donald Trump told “lies plain and simple”.

2018 – WhatsApp rumours of child kidnappers prompt two men to be beaten to death by a mob in Karbi Angong district, Assam.

2018 – World’s most powerful supercomputer, Summit, can process 200,000 trillion calculations per second, launched at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, by IBM and Nvidia.

2021 – National Geographic announces it is officially recognizing the South Ocean as the world’s fifth ocean.
