780 BC – The first total solar eclipse reliably recorded by the Chinese was noted.

1070 – Roquefort cheese created in a cave near Roquefort, France.

1794 – Joseph Priestley, chemist and natural philosopher, (he had discovered oxygen on 1 Aug 1774) arrived at New York having emigrated from England. He also created soda water.

1887 – The Pasteur Institute was founded in Paris, France.

1903 – Gandhiji established the weekly journal “Indian Opinion.”

1907 – Automatic washer & dryer introduced.

1926 – Dalai Lama introduces a tax on ears for Tibetans to equip the army. Those with only one ear will pay half the tax.

1929 – George Eastman demonstrated the first Technicolor movie.

1937 – The first shopping carts were introduced at the Humpty Dumpty supermarket in Oklahoma City, invented by the store owner Sylvan Goldman.

1941 – Indian National Seva Dal was established.

1959 – Chakravarti Rajagopalachari opposed the Socialist Policies of Indian National Congress and founded Swatantra Party along with Ranga.

1963 – Six-year-old Robert Patch received a U.S. patent for a “Toy Truck”. The toy separated into a chassis, driver’s cab, truck body, wheels and four axles so it could be reassembled in either a closed van body or dump truck form.

1973 – A patent for the ATM is granted to Don Wetzel, Tom Barnes and George Chastain.

1987 – A Swedish Government enquiry finds that Bofors paid commission to middlemen for concluding Arms Purchase Agreement with India.

1993 – The Babri tribunal strikes down ban on RSS and Bajrang Dal and upholds outlawing of VHP.

2018 – US President Donald Trump tweets “I have the absolute right to PARDON myself”.

2019 – Deforestation of the Amazon forest in Brazil the fastest for a decade as 740 square kilometers cleared in 30 days according to Brazilian space research institute.

Born…. 1936 – Nutan, veteran Bollywood actor. Known for her roles in Anaari, Sujata, Bandini, Saudagar, Milan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki etc. among 80 films. Awarded Padma Shri and won Filmfare award 6 times.

1936 – Bina Rai, legendary Bollywood actor. Her roles in Anarkali, Taj Mahal, Ghunghat, Insaniyat, Kali Ghata, Durgesh Nandini, Daadi Maa etc. Won a Filmfare award for Gunghat in 1960 (pic credit-erzindgi.com).

1959 – Anil Ambani, younger son of legendary businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance  empire. Fell out with brother Mukesh in 2005 and his companies are in big losses at present. A Marathon enythusiast  married noted film actor heronie  Tina Munim and has 2 sons.

RIP…. 1989 – Melville de Mellow, eminent broadcaster.  (I can still clearly recall the 27 May 1964 AIR 1:00 pm news bulletin, that I heard in our Kupwara Battalion mess.
