1698 – East India Company purchased Calcutta, which was not more than a village at that time.

1885 – The world’s first motorcycle, designed by Gottlieb Daimler, made its first significant test-run. It had a wooden frame and wheels. A leather drive belt ran between the engine and large brass gears on the rear wheel. With no suspension on the wheels, the leather saddle gave a very uncomfortable ride, at a speed up to 12 km/hr. (This was built as an experimental vehicle to test the new Daimler engine in a proof of concept, which was to power Daimler’s first motorised carriage the following year).

1891 – Granville T. N Woods patents electric railway.

1901 – Formal inauguration of the new North-West Frontier Province created out of the Punjab.

1983 – U.S. student Fred Cohen presented to a security seminar the results of his test – the first documented virus, created as an experiment in computer security. Cohen created this first virus when studying for a PhD at the University of Southern California. Others had written about the potential for creating pernicious programmes but he was the first to demonstrate a working example.

1990 – Chandra Shekhar Singh sworn in as 8th Prime Minister of India. He remained in this office till June 21, 1991. Devilal was sworn in as the Dy. Prime Minister.

1991 — South Africa’s 1st cricket international since 1970 – one-day v India.

2019 – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announces the discovery of a new oil field with an estimated 53 million barrels of oil in Khuzestan province.

2022 – Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban ban women from using public parks and funfairs.

1848 – Surendranath Banerji, popularly known as Rashtraguru. He was President of the Indian National Congress twice, in 1895 at Pune and in 1902 at Ahmedabad.

1940 – Walt Disney begins serving as an informer for the Los Angeles office of the FBI; his job is to report back information on Hollywood subversives. He started Walt Disney Motion Pictures and created Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Oswald, Lucky Rabbit like characters   for kids’ entertainment in Saratoga Springs, California USA.
