1869 – Thomas Edison of Boston, received a patent for an “electrographic vote recorder.” The device was the first of its kind, and would enable a legislator to register a vote either for or against an issue by turning a switch to the right or left.

1874 – East India Company was dissolved.

1880 -The first pay telephone service in the United States, for public use went into service.

1916 – Lokmanya Tilak roared ”Freedom (Swaraj) is my birthright” at Ahmednagar.

1935 – Driving test & license plates introduced in England. The first person in Britain to take the test and pass is Mr R.E.L.BEERE. The son of Mr R.E.L.BEERE. still has the certificate 00001 signed on behalf of the (then) Minister of Transport.

1938 – Superman created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster made his first appearance in D.C. Comics’ Action Comics Series.

1939 -1st boxing match to be televised; Lon Nova defeats Max Baer.

1946 – Television licences were first issued in Britain and were sold at Post Offices. Television services had been suspended during WW II. A Mickey Mouse cartoon was being shown when TV service was suddenly blacked out for defence reasons on 1 Sep 1939. That same cartoon was shown on 8 Jun 1946 when television re-opened to cover the Victory Parade.

1947 – The Doomsday Clock appeared for the first time, as the fourth quadrant of a clock face with its hands at 7 minutes to midnight. It was the background image on the cover of the June issue of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. From then to the present, the Doomsday Clock image has been on the cover of the Bulletin, though the hands over the years have been shown moving forward or back to convey how close humanity is to catastrophic destruction).

1955 – India’s Untouchability (Offence) Act comes into force.

1958 – Following a long political crisis over the revolt in Algeria, Charles de Gaulle is called out of retirement to head a new emergency government as a virtual dictator for a 6-month period to bring the country back together.

1959 – The Chinese occupy Tibet and Dalai Lama flees to India.

1961 – Regular FM stereo radio broadcasting began in the U.S.

1972 – Space Commission and Department of Space was set up. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) brought under Department of Space (DOS).

1980 – 1st transmission of CNN, the Cable News Network.

2001 – The king, queen and seven other members of the royal family in Nepal are shot dead after the heir to the throne Crown Prince Dipendra went on a rampage with a gun before turning it on himself.

2014 – India officially divided the state of Andhra Pradesh to create the nation’s 29th state, Telangana; Hyderabad will act as joint capital for both states for the next decade.

2017 – US President Donald Trump announces the US is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.

2022 – Turkey officially changes its name to Türkiye at the United Nations and internationally.
