1905 – First Partition of Bengal, which was proposed by Lord Curzon, was accepted by British Government’s Minister of India.
1957 – India’s biggest sheet-glass manufacturing factory formally opened in Hazaribagh, Bihar.
1969 – Apollo XI astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. Armstrong stepped on the lunar surface at 10:56 ET and proclaimed, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Internationally, nearly 700 million television viewers witnessed the event live as it happened.
1976 – America’s “Viking I Lander” spacecraft, launched 20 Aug 1975, made its successful, first-ever landing on Mars at Chryse Planitia, and began transmitting pictures.
1989 – Burma government puts author Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest.
2000 – In a nationwide swoop, IT Department officials search the residences of cricketers Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and former ICC Chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya and recover incriminating documents.
2017 – China announces a plan against “foreign garbage” banning 24 categories of plastic and recyclable waste from 2018.
2017 – Elon Musk tweets he has “verbal government approval” to build 29 minute Hyperloop between New York and Washington.
2020 – Scientists find evidence of volcanoes on Venus, showing the planet is not as dormant as previously thought (Nature Geoscience).
2021- Amazon founder Jeff Bezos goes into space in first unpiloted suborbital flight with all-civilian crew, aboard rocket developed by his company Blue Origin.
2021 – Torrential rain causes severe flooding in China’s Hunan province, flooding subways with people still on the trains, killing at least 12 people in Zhengzhou city.
2022 – An intense heatwave across Europe results in over 1000 deaths in Portugal and 500 in Spain; while starting wildfires across Spain, France, Italy and Greece.
