1752 – Ben Franklin’s kite-flying experiment proved lightning and electricity were related. In Sep 1752, he equipped his house with a lightning rod, connecting it to bells that ring when rod is electrified.
1785 – 2 French balloonists die in world’s 1st fatal aviation accident.
1844 – Charles Goodyear patents the vulcanization of rubber (photo credit-Alamy)
1867 – The first U.S. gallstone operation was performed by Dr. John Stough Bobbs, known as “the father of cholecystotomy (The first account of gallstones had been given as early as 1420 by a Florentine pathologist Antonio Benevieni, in a woman who died with abdominal pain. Jean-Louis Petit performed gall bladder surgery in Europe in 1743).
1878 – 1st attempt at motion pictures (used 12 cameras, each taking 1 picture) done to see if all 4 of a horse’s hooves leave the ground.
1880 – The first U.S. patent for a safety razor was issued to brothers Frederick and Otto Kampfe of New York. Their patent described their razor to be “simple and durable in construction, of small first cost, compact in form, and adapted to be used without soiling the fingers of the user.” (Two decades later, King Camp Gillette invented the disposable safety razor blade).
1924 – Ford Motor Company manufactures its 10 millionth Model T automobile.
1947 – All-India Congress accepts British plan for partition of India in New Delhi. Also known as the Mountbatten Plan, it envisioned dividing British India on the basis of religious demographics, which went on to create the Sovereign States of the Dominion of Pakistan and the Union of India (later the Republic of India). The creation of Pakistan was advocated by the All India Muslim League, which was founded in Dhaka in 1906 by Muslims who were of the opinion that Muslim members of the Indian National Congress did not enjoy the same rights as Hindu members did.
1990 – Punjab Government returned gold and other valuables seized from Golden Temple during the 1984 Blue Star operation to SGPC.
1992 – 1st Berlin Air Show in 60 years.
