1612 – The Battle of Swally, also known as the Battle of Suvali, was a naval battle fought between the British East India Company and the Portuguese; the latter were defeated.

1814 – The Times in London became the first newspaper to be printed by steam power.
1870 – Compulsory education proclaimed in England.
1932 – A U.S. patent was issued for the first card game table with an automatic dealing device, to Laurens Hammond of Chicago.
1933 – 1st state liquor stores authorised in US (Pennsylvania).
1944 – The first “blue baby” operation was performed successfully at Johns Hopkins University by Dr. Alfred Blalock and paediatric cardiologist Helen B. Taussig.
1945 – A Sikorsky R5 helicopter performed the first rescue from a sinking civilian vessel and the first use of a rescue winch.
1948 – Assembly bans discrimination against untouchables.
1962 – Haryana achieved their target of supplying electricity to 100% villages.
1989 – Voters oust Congress party after Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was alleged to have benefitted family friend in Bofors kickbacks., by his minister VP Singh., who became the PM later.
2012 – New findings from MESSENGER, NASA’s space probe, indicate almost definitively, that the north pole of Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, has water ice buried beneath the surface (pic credit-NASA).
2018 – Thousands of farmers protest the agrarian crisis at Parliament House in Delhi.
2022 – For the first time fewer than half of people in England and Wales call themselves Christian according to the 2021 Census.
2023 – US says it has foiled assassination attempt by an Indian national on a US citizen who advocates for a Sikh separatist state.

1803 – Christian A Doppler, Austrian physicist, known for Doppler effect in waves.
1904 – JRD Tata. Indian industrialist, philonthropist, expert pilot who got flyimg license in and launched Tata Airlines on Oct. 15, 1932, which was later converted to Air India by Govt. of India and taken over. The airlines has now been privatised and handed back to Tata group. He was the predecessor of Rattan Tata, his nephew Rattan Tata, as Chairman Tata Group, who recently died. (by mistake, we have covered JRD’s birthday, in yesterday’s issue. The error is regretted).
1962 – Sadanand Viswanath, Indian cricketer who played in 3 Tests and 22 ODIs. He later became a coach of Indian team and trained it to win World Championship Cup in 1985. He is now first class Umpire (pic credit-Facebook).
1984 – Neha Pendse. Bollywood model, TV serial and cine actor. She acted in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Malyalam films like Golmal (2003), Nothing But Life, Abraham Lincoln, Swami, June, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari etc. She has won ITA, Pune International Film Festival and a Filmfare award.
1995 – Liv Hewson. Australian actor, known for roles in SantaClara Diet series, Yellow Jackets, Undereb My Skin, Let it Snow etc. for fairy tale stories. She refused to submit entry for Emmy awards for difference in perception. She got Human Rights Campaign for Visbility Award.

1953 – Bahuriya Ramswarup Devi, better known as Laxmibai of Bihar. She will be always remembered for Chhapra District Revolt, whereby she tied seven British men and threw them in Narayani River. She was also awarded Raman Magasasay award and electyed to Bihar Assembly before death in 1953.
1975 – Graham Hill. popular Motorsport personality who won 2 Formula One races, won rowing competitions and owned motor-racing team Embassy Hill. He died in an Air Crash near Arkley, London alongwith his 5 team members.
