TN govt will press Centre to prevent attack on fishermen by Lankan Navy
Calls upon Centre for taking steps to retrieve Katchatheevu, an islet ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974.
Chennai, June 21 (UNI) The DMK government in Tamil Nadu will
protect the interests of fishermen and urge the Centre to find a
permanent solution to prevent attacks on them by the Sri Lankan
Navy, besides taking steps to retrieve Katchatheevu, an islet ceded
to the Island Nation.
Delivering his customary address to the newly constituted 16th Legislative Assembly, Governor Banwarilal Purohit said the State Government will protect the interests of its fishing community, including taking up the issue of retrieval of Katchatheevu with the Government of India. The State Government will urge the Union Government to devise a permanent solution to repeated instances of assault, arrest and even loss of life of fishermen from Tamil Nadu at the hands of the Sri Lankan Navy. The Government will also urged the Centre to constitute a National Commission for the Welfare of Fishermen to look into all aspects relating to the welfare of marine and inland fishermen.
