New Delhi: At least two persons lost their lives in separate incidents after the national capital received a heavy downpour, accompanied by a hailstorm, which lashed a few parts of the national capital on Monday evening.
The deaths were reported near Jama Masjid and at Angoori Bagh area near the Red Fort.
A 50-year-old man died after a portion of a balcony fell on him near Jama Masjid. Another man aged 65 years died under the weight of a tree that fell on him in Angoori Bagh near the Red Fort, said Delhi Police.
Police have identified the 50-year-old as Kamal Lal. He was walking outside, when a portion of a balcony fell on him from the second floor.
Meanwhile, the 65-year-old homeless man named Basir Baba was killed on Angoori Bagh Road after a tree fell on him, it added.
The Delhi Police said so far, no foul play is suspected.
“A call from Sanjeevan Hospital, Darya Ganj, was received in Jama Masjid police station at about 1808 hrs regarding a male person, namely Kamal, aged about 50 years, being brought dead on arrival,” the DCP Central said.
“On enquiry, it was found that today at about 4 pm, Kamal was roaming outside his house and suddenly due to heavy rain and storm, the balcony of second floor of a neighboring property fell over Kamal, who was brought to the hospital by his son Himanshu. Till now, no foul play is suspected in the death of Kamal,” he added.
On the other hand, Basir was declared brought dead at the hospital after a tree fell on him. Two others managed to escape without any serious injury.
The downpour, coupled with strong winds and hailstorm in some places damaged many cars, brought traffic to a grinding halt, left trees uprooted and led to power outages in various parts of Delhi and nearby areas.
The rains also led to waterlogging in several areas of the capital. Flights also had to be diverted due to bad weather.
The Delhi Police said a total of 294 calls were received till 8 pm regarding trees falling following the rain.
Besides, the finial of the middle dome of the iconic Jama Masjid also suffered major damage in the rainstorm, causing injuries to two-three persons. The canopy at Vijay Chowk was also toppled in the rain. (UNI)
