Mumbai, Maharashtra,: The much-anticipated biopic on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has hit a legal roadblock just days ahead of its planned release. The film’s producers have approached the Bombay High Court, alleging “arbitrary behavior” by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in delaying the certification process.

According to sources close to the production, the film was scheduled for release this month, but the CBFC has neither approved nor rejected the certification application, despite the mandatory time frame having lapsed.

Frustrated with the prolonged delay, the makers filed a petition in the Bombay High Court, accusing the board of deliberate stalling and political pressure. The film’s director stated, “We have followed all legal protocols and submitted the film weeks ago. Yet, the board remains silent. This is injustice to creative freedom.”

In response, the Bombay High Court has taken serious note of the delay and issued a directive to the CBFC to provide a clear explanation within two days. The court questioned why the certification process was being held back when the filmmakers had complied with all procedural requirements.

The film reportedly traces the early life of Ajay Bisht (CM Yogi’s birth name), his transformation into a Hindu monk, and rise in Indian politics. Given the sensitive political narrative, sources say there has been internal hesitation within the board regarding approval—though no official reason has been communicated.

Legal experts believe this case could have broader implications for the film industry, especially for politically-themed cinema. “If certification is delayed due to political reasons, it undermines not only artistic liberty but also the authority of the board itself,” said a Mumbai-based entertainment lawyer.

Supporters of the film have launched a social media campaign demanding transparency from the CBFC, with hashtags like #JusticeForYogiBiopic and #StopCensorship trending.

The final decision now rests on the Bombay High Court’s hearing scheduled in the next two days. Until then, the release of the biopic hangs in uncertainty.
