Stalemate over CM selection continues in Assam
Guwahati/New Delhi, May 7 (UNI) Nearly five days have passed after the BJP alliance won a clear cut majority, top brass of BJP high command has still not been able to decide who will be the next chief minister of Assam.
The tussle for occupying the top post in Assam between present Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal and his deputy Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is coming out in the open with inordinate delay in announcing the name of the candidate for the CM post.
In fact, Congress which has won 29 seats in the assembly elections have started to fish in the troubled waters.
Senior leaders of the Congress have said that they will support anyone who wishes to form a non-BJP government in the state.
Meanwhile, BJP president JP Nadda had a meeting at Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence in New Delhi over the selection of Assam Chief Minister. Sources said that the leaders in the meeting examined the names of incumbent CM Sarbananda Sonowal and finance minister Hemanta Biswa Sharma for the post of next CM of Assam.
Sources said that the final call for the Chief Minister will be taken following the party’s parliamentary board meeting. In the recently concluded Assam Assembly election, the BJP-led alliance got a majority to form the next government. In the 126-member Assembly, the BJP-led NDA won 75 seats while the Congress-led alliance managed to get 50 seats.
According to reports, the BJP is under pressure to replace incumbent chief minister Sonowal with Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose clout with the top leadership in Delhi is well known.
