Howrah: The overall situation was returning to normal on Sunday with police patrolling some trouble-torn areas of Howrah district, while prohibitory orders continued and internet services remained suspended, official sources said.
Protesters had blocked the national highway and set on fire some vehicles and shops over the past two days in some areas of the district, railing against the remarks of a suspended BJP leader in New Delhi,
Howrah city police commissioner Praveen Tripathi told reporters that the overall situation was under control and there had been no report of any untoward incident during the day.
Tripathi, who took charge on Saturday in place of C Sudhakar, said so far 50 people have been arrested from different areas for creating disturbances.
He said many FIRs were also filed in relation to the violence. The district administration has clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 Criminal Penal Code since Friday night with internet services remaining suspended in the volatile pockets.
Violent incidents were reported from Uluberia and Panchla where vehicles and shops were torched. The trouble-makers also tried to loot an ATM counter, that was also set on fire at Panchla. The situation in Murshidabad’s Beldanga, Rejinagar and Shaktipur police station areas, where internet services have been suspended following violent protests over the row, was also returning to normal.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that he was “unlawfully obstructed” by the cops at Radhamoni under Tamluk police station in East Medinipur district.
“I have been unlawfully obstructed by the WB Police on NH 116 at Radhamoni under Tamluk PS. Medinipur,” Adhikari tweeted.
“Is there a Curfew in place in Purba Medinipur District or Section 144 has been imposed? I am moving towards Kolaghat for having lunch. How is it prohibited?,” the Nandigram MLA asked.
“I wonder why WB Police DGP Mmalaviya (Manoj Malaviya) is using the police personnel to obstruct BJP Bengal leadership when the need of the hour is to deploy them across WB where rioters are having a free run destroying & looting public & private properties,” Adhikari questioned.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankar has sought an update from the State Chief Secretary regarding the alleged obstruction of the opposition leader’s movement.
“Chief Secretary has been called to effect an immediate response to the communication sent by the Hon’ble Leader of Opposition This in context of earlier curtailment of his rights is inappropriate. Why have undeclared emergency!” a tweet from Raj Bhavan said. (UNI)
