Shock for 46.43 Lakh BPL Families in Haryana..
Mustard oil price more than doubles; government issues order, provides 2 liters per month
Haryana : In a major blow to 46.43 lakh Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in Haryana, the state government has announced a sharp increase in the price of mustard oil distributed under the public distribution system (PDS). The cost of mustard oil has been revised from Rs 20 per liter to Rs 51 per liter, marking more than a twofold hike.
The Haryana Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department has issued an official order regarding the price revision. As per the new rates, the increased cost will be applicable from this month onward. The state government currently provides 2 liters of mustard oil per family every month under its welfare scheme.
This steep increase in price has caused concern among low-income households, many of whom rely on subsidized goods to meet their daily needs. The hike means that instead of Rs 40 for 2 liters, BPL families will now have to pay Rs 102, which could strain their already limited budgets.
Officials cited rising procurement and market prices as the main reasons behind the hike. The government says the revised rate reflects the current wholesale price of mustard oil in the market and ensures continuity of supply through fair price shops.
Consumer rights activists and opposition parties have criticized the move, saying it goes against the welfare of the poor. They argue that essential items like cooking oil should remain affordable for those struggling with inflation and unemployment. The price increase has also sparked debates on social media, with many users urging the government to roll back the hike or offer additional subsidies to cushion the impact on the poor.
Government sources, however, have indicated that the decision was taken after careful consideration of market trends and budget constraints. They added that any future relief or rollback will depend on the state’s financial capacity and central support.
Haryana’s PDS scheme covers millions of economically weak families, offering them essential commodities like wheat, rice, sugar, and cooking oil at subsidized rates. The mustard oil hike is the steepest in recent years and may influence future pricing of other essentials.
