Scorching Heat Grips Chandigarh at 38.9°C

Residents Stay Indoors as IMD Issues Heatwave Warning……

Chandigarh – The city of Chandigarh is reeling under an intense heatwave, with the mercury shooting up to 38.9°C on Sunday. The sudden spike in temperature forced residents to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours, as the harsh sun and dry winds created unbearable conditions outside.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current heatwave is expected to continue for the next few days. Officials have issued a yellow alert for the region, warning vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children, to avoid exposure to the sun and to stay hydrated.

Local markets and roads wore a deserted look during the afternoon, with many preferring to stay indoors to escape the blazing heat. Water consumption saw a sharp rise, while electricity demand also spiked due to increased use of fans, coolers, and air conditioning.

Health officials have urged citizens to avoid outdoor activity between 12 pm and 4 pm, wear light cotton clothing, and increase their intake of fluids. Cases of heat exhaustion and dehydration have already been reported at local clinics and hospitals.

Weather experts said that the intense heat is being caused by dry northwesterly winds and clear skies. With no immediate sign of rainfall or relief, temperatures are expected to hover around 39–40°C for the next three days.

The IMD has also hinted at possible hotter-than-usual conditions this May, prompting the administration to prepare for potential heatwave emergencies. Residents are being advised to keep a close watch on weather updates and follow safety advisories strictly.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh’s civic body has begun sprinkling water on major roads and deploying water tankers in high-traffic areas to reduce surface temperature.
