Schools Reopen in Punjab Amid Ceasefire; Border Districts Remain Closed
Education Minister Confirms Resumption of Classes; Safety Measures Continue in Sensitive Areas….
Chandigarh : Schools and colleges across Punjab are set to reopen from Monday, with the exception of a few sensitive border districts. This decision comes after a period of heightened alert due to recent cross-border tensions. While most of the state returns to normal academic activity, institutions near the India-Pakistan border will remain shut for an extended period as a safety precaution.
Punjab’s Education Minister, Harjot Singh Bains, confirmed that regular classes and examinations will resume from May 13 for schools and colleges in non-border districts. He praised the resilience of students and teachers during the temporary closure and assured that the academic calendar will stay on track.
However, schools and colleges in Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, and Sangrur will remain closed on Monday. District officials have been instructed to assess the local situation daily and make reopening decisions based on security assessments. In Amritsar, Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney stated that educational institutions will remain closed for in-person learning, but teachers are instructed to conduct online classes to ensure minimal disruption in studies.
The state had earlier seen preventive safety measures implemented, including voluntary blackouts in certain regions and restrictions on movement near border areas. Although the situation has eased with a ceasefire now in effect, authorities are taking no chances in border regions. The safety of students, teachers, and staff remains a top priority.
The Education Minister further clarified that universities and colleges that had postponed exams due to recent tensions should proceed according to revised schedules. He also emphasized the need to adhere strictly to safety and academic guidelines issued by the state government.
This measured approach allows Punjab to balance both educational needs and public safety. While most students will return to classrooms, those in sensitive areas will continue learning online until their districts are deemed secure. Parents and guardians have been advised to follow local announcements closely and ensure their children comply with any instructions from school authorities.
As peace gradually returns to the region, the government remains vigilant and committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students in Punjab.
