Russia views cooperation with Iran as long-term political course
Moscow: Russia is geared for cooperation with Iran and views it as a long-term foreign political commitment on mutually beneficial terms, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
“Cooperation with Iran is not sporadic; it is our long-term foreign policy trend. We have been seeking trade and economic relations with Iran for a long time, and they already have acquired an established, solid foundation,” Peskov told Russian broadcaster Channel One during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Iran.
The spokesman stressed that bilateral cooperation is directed to the future, while having “solid past” and “substantial present.” Peskov added that Tehran and Moscow can engage on mutually beneficial terms only.
When asked if Russia and Iran would sign a comprehensive cooperation treaty today, Peskov responded negatively, adding that this document is expected to be signed in the coming months.
Putin arrived in Tehran earlier in the day. He will take part in a trilateral summit of states-guarantors of the Astana peace process on Syria and hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event. (UNI/SPUTNIK)
